Community Compost Facility
Local Garden Waste Facility another step closer

A facility that will take our communities garden waste as turn it into compost has taken another step closer to reality with a suitable site located to replace the original site that turned out to be on a dump!

As we go to press we are awaiting exciting news on funding for a storage container for our equipment. We already have had an offer of pallets for compost bins from Matua Valley Wines and now are waiting on site preparation to be completed.

The main thing we need now are volunteers to get this project completed in time for everyones spring gardening activities!

If you want to get involved in helping complete this project contact Phelan (phelan@muriwai-environment.org or 021 844 124) or Erin (kinsale@clear.net.nz or 021 411 568)

New Bird Pest hits Auckland

DOC need your help...
Red Vented Bulbuls are in Auckland
, and the number of areas they are being found in is growing.  These are an aggressive pest bird and we want to eradicate them before they get established.  We urgently need to get reports of sightings of Red Vented Bulbuls as soon as they are seen.

So far we have recent confirmed reports in four main clusters in Auckland:
1.Mängere, Manurewa, Alfriston
2.Henderson, Massey, Te Atatu
3.Belmont, Takapuna
4.Whangaparäoa Peninsular

In addition they have also been reported in the Waitakeres in late May/early June.

Please click here for a Fact Sheet.  From this you will see this bird is distinctive to look at.  It also has a very unusual and distinctive call – which you can hear by clicking here.  If you see or hear any unusual bird, please call 0800 809966 immediately.  If you can, please take a photo.

Unique forests devastated by plantations

The end is in sight for the great forests of Sumatra and Borneo and the animals and people who depend on them. Thirty years ago the world's third-and sixth-largest islands were full of tigers, elephants, rhinos, orangutans and exotic birds and plants but they have been trashed in a single generation by global agribusiness and pulp and paper industries.

Their plantations supply the world with toilet paper, biofuels and vegetable oil to make everyday foods such as margarine, cream cheese and chocolate, but distraught scientists and environmental groups warn that one of the 21st century's greatest ecological disasters is rapidly unfolding... read more

MeACT Trustees stand in Council Elections

Two of MeACT's trustees are standing in the local body elections...
Christine Rose is standing for Councillor of the Waitakere Ward Christine Rose is a born and bred Westie who loves our communities, culture and environment.

christine with kiwiHer record shows her commitment to our area – she served 15 years in local & regional government including six years on the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) with Councillor Sandra Coney, who fully supports her for the Waitakere Ward.

Christine was Deputy Chair of the ARC, and Chair of the ARC’s Transport Committees which oversaw good progress in the region’s transport – she’s a proven achiever.

We all spend too much time stuck in traffic when we could be at home with our families; our communities need more investment, and our environment is under pressure. Council organisations should keep their costs under control.

Christine supports better transport, parks, sports fields, and more swimming pools. Christine supports arts and heritage and is a well-known environmentalist. She lives in Waitakere’s rural foothills.

Our district’s natural environment is unique and our economic development and preserving the environment go hand in hand.

Nursery natives ready for spring

MeACT's native plant nursery has a new batch of locally sourced seeds germinating for Spring.
Last year our nursery was able to supply enough plants to kick off the Village Green project and we're hoping the latest batch can add to this.

Our nursery not only helps us with plants for our projects but it's also a valuable educational opportunity for adults and kids alike - there is a chance to learn about sourcing and propagating plants plus there is the opportunity to do courses on nursery work from time to time.

If you want to help with our nursery Robin is keen to get more people involved... contact him on 411 7323 or email robin@muriwai.mobi
