Did you know 1 in 5 women in the US have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lifetime?
I am one of those women. I fell victim to sexual assault after consuming a drink spiked with a "date rape" drug. I chose to be vocal about my experience because this was something I never thought would happen to a 40-year old mother of three little boys who was at a work conference.
It turns out sexual assault has no boundaries. It happens more often than we know. And I wanted others to be aware.
Horrifically, 3 out of the 5 women I first shared my story with, in turn, shared their own experiences of past rape...experiences they had never shared before. I discovered many women (and men) are walking around carrying these painful experiences, often alone. It isn't until someone else shares, they feel permission and a safe space to share.
Will you take action on this day to give survivors the message they are supported and not alone?
