Indian Point Energy Center Could Be Shut Down Completely by 2021

After decades of wrangling, hand wringing and activism from groups like Clearwater, Riverkeeper, NRDC and the Sierra Club, the Indian Point Energy Center will cease operations entirely by 2021. Entergy, the company which owns the facility, finally agreed to shut it down, despite having pushed top have the plant's license renewed since 2007.

Indian Point is situated at the edge of the Hudson River in Buchanan, NY, less than 50 miles from midtown Manhattan, and all of the spent fuel from both of its two reactors is stored in containment pools onsite, collected since the plant began operating in 1974. An accident and attack would devastate the entire Hudson Valley, and NYC would not be spared. At the same time, there is no evacuation plan for the contamination zone beyond a 10 mile radius of the plant itself.

That said, nuclear energy provides uninterrupted base load power, and as this article from the NY Times mentions, there is no specific plan to replace what Indian Point generates. While the NY Sun initiative aims to add 3GW of solar capacity by 2023, that capacity will be intermittent, as will new wind generation. While new battery storage options are being explored right now, the loss of base load supply points toward fracked gas as the logical choice of bridge fuel...a choice which is sure to provoke controversy in the coming months and years.
