New SolarCity Panel Factory to Bring Thousands of Jobs to Buffalo
SolarCity is the largest installer-leaser of solar systems in the US. In 2014 alone, they added 1 GW of solar generated electricity to the energy mix- about the same amount as a small power plant, spread out over tens of thousands of rooftops. The company is also a model of vertical integration, as it aims to cut costs and make solar technology more affordable.
To that end, SolarCity is building a 1 million square foot solar panel factory in Buffalo, meant to compete with Chinese panel manufacturers. The factory, scheduled to open in 2017, will create thousands of local jobs, many at the factory itself, but almost as many in support and supply roles, providing services for workers and materials needed to keep the factory running smoothly.
SolarCity received $750 million in incentives to building Buffalo, as part of the governor's investment strategy to revitalize the northern part of the state. You can read all the details in the Buffalo News here.
