Solar One Partners with STRIVE, Gets Featured on CBS News

While US unemployment rates have gone down significantly in recent years, there are still racial disparities in the job market. African-American males have an unemployment rate of 19.7%, while Hispanic males are at 10.8% and white males at 7.6%.

STRIVE is a non profit that aims to address that disparity. They offer job readiness programs, counseling, and eventually, on-site training...which is where Solar One comes in.

STRIVE trainees learn green construction, carpentry, plumbing and electrical; green building maintenance; solar installation and more. And in this video, CBS Evening News offers a peek into the STRIVE program and a visit to our Workforce Training Lab. We think you'll be very impressed.

Looking for a Job This Summer? Solar One Is Hiring a Seasonal Gardener

Solar One/ Stuyvesant Cove Park is looking for a full time seasonal gardener from May through October. Stuyvesant Cove Park is an organic, all native species park on the East River at 23rd Street in Manhattan.

Under the supervision of the Park Manager, the gardener is responsible for the daily upkeep of the park's garden areas, including all weeding, watering, mulching, pruning and planting. All work is done with non-mechanized tools, which the gardener will keep inventory of and maintain. Light grounds work such as repairing fencing might be included in addition to simple data collecting and record keeping. The seasonal gardener will also assist in the supervision of interns and volunteers and must have leadership or teaching experience. This is a great opportunity for someone who is knowledgeable of NE native plants and wants to work at a small park, where he or she can have a greater degree of creative input both with the park plantings and with potential teaching opportunities. Workweek is Tuesday through Saturday, 35 hours per week.
