A Personal Experience
During the recent epidemic, unable to get to the library, I had to resort to unread books on my own shelf which included the four-volume set, Abraham Lincoln: The War Years by Carl Sandburg (1939), left to me years ago by my mother. Within the first pages I became inevitably drawn to the institution of slavery, the major political issue of that day, and began to consider it in relation to the ongoing riots of this summer.
