A Field Day for Beginners and Grizzled Weed Warriors Alike
What’s New? What’s Tried and True? The Latest and the Best on Display to Help You Control Troublesome Weeds like Serrated Tussock

Can you tell Serrated Tussock from the dozens of beneficial native tussocks in our district? Or have you been fighting this weed for years and know it all too well? Whether you’re new to rural life or have been at the game for decades, you will find this From Hoes to Helicopters field day good fun and good value. Here are the details:

When From around 9.30am to 2.30pm on Saturday 9 March.

Where Yellangalo, Berrebangalo Rd Ladevale [follow signs from Ladevale Rd].

Why Serrated Tussock is a serious environmental, economic and social
menace in the Upper Lachlan. Yes, it can be controlled but, for us to make
lasting headway, we need to attack it together. As well as a legal obligation to do
so, it is most of all about being a good neighbour.

Yellangalo’s experience with this weed is like that of many other properties. It has battled this weed for years, at times gaining the upper hand but the ever-resilient Serrated Tussock kept returning. Now the tide is turning our way.

What’s On

Whatever your situation, there will be something for you. Weekenders, broad-acre farmers, newcomers and old-timers will find this time well spent. We will:

  • see the results of recent major work on large Serrated Tussock infestations;
  • show you how to identify Serrated Tussock if you are not sure about this;
  • meet some local people who have gained the upper hand over Serrated Tussock and learn from their successes and mistakes;
  • showcase some of the tools and techniques you could use on your place to control Serrated Tussock and other weeds; including
    • traditional chipping;
    • spot spraying the right way;
    • in just a few seconds with a quick shake of a hand held shaker pack, say goodbye to those isolated plants using the new, modern granular flupropanate;
    • engaging ground-spraying contractors – it can be very economical;
    • engaging an aerial spraying contractor to attack very large infestations with a helicopter – it may be a lot cheaper than you think.

There will be many opportunities to ask questions and chat to the experts on hand during the day; including

  • Local DPI agronomist Fiona Leech;
  • Rural educator and Serrated Tussock survivor Alison Elvin;
  • Upper Lachlan Shire Council Senior Weeds Manager Paul Brown;
  • Scott Montgomery, a local grazier and aerial spraying contractor;
  • John Brotchie, Ag Innovations, NSW Distributor of Granular Flupropanate
  • Martin Walsh and Nic Clancy – local spraying contractors
  • Brendan O’Reilly and Sue Mackenzie– near neighbours of Yellangalo who have also had to deal with the Serrated Tussock problem.
  • Genevieve Reardon, Lachlan Catchment Management Authority
