Well, it's not exactly been a balmy Mediterranean summer here so far has it? But we've had lots of smiley sunshine at Open Door despite the drizzle - we've loved seeing people enjoying coffee, cakes and company again! And with our new gazebo in action on the cafe patio, some of you have even been braving the rainy days to take in the blossoming beauty and tranquility of our garden.

We are excited about our upcoming exhibition too, plus a new drawing course and a fantastic fundraising event, so read on to find out more...

PS We are working hard to finalise our summer programme of workshops and courses, which we hope will have something for everyone, so look out for infromation coming out about that very soon.

Berkhamsted's Got Talent!

The title of our new textiles exhibition says it all - 'Berkhamsted's Got Talent'. Opening next Tuesday 13th July, it features the amazing Berkhamsted Textile Banner - stunning depictions of Berkhamsted landmarks created collaboratively by a diverse range of local textile creatives, needleworkers and artists.

The Exhibition is in memory of our dear friend and fellow crafter Barbara Thoma who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. As well as some of Barbara's work, the exhibition will showcase a selection of other beautiful textiles creations made throughout lockdown by the best of our local textile talent. Don't miss it!

A new Memory Cafe manager

Welcome to our new Memory Cafe manager Deirdre Hawkins who joined us just over a month ago and is enjoying her new role busily planning lots of new activities for the group, which supports people with dementia and their carers.

Deidre began her involvement with Open Door last year as a volunteer when she would drop off a cake each week for the health walks.

On one such visit she happened to see our wonderful memory cafe in full flow and saw first-hand, the 'supportive and inclusive group' with happy and relaxed participants enjoying a quiz and making art and she decided that was where she wanted to help.
"I’ve felt welcomed and look forward to meeting with the group each week. It's been really enjoyable and I hope as lockdown eases, we can see even more people through the door."

Memory Cafe runs every Friday morning from 10:30am to 12noon, supported by our lovely volunteers and Home Instead, who provide care for the elderly.

We have a few free places available and look forward to meeting some new faces, so if you might be interested please drop us an email or why not pop in for a visit and a chat?

New Community pantry volunteer needed

We have an exciting vacancy for someone with a passion for shopping!

After over a year of careful management, our volunteer Louise is now ready to hand over the baton to someone else for the care and responsibility of the Open Door Community Pantry.

Louise did a wonderful job ensuring the pantry was always well stocked and we wish her well in her work as a nutritionist.

The role will include

  • Checking the pantry once a week, ensuring it is clean and tidy
  • Replenishing with food items, personal care, baby care and housecleaning products
  • Liaising with other local community pantry projects or businesses/charities that may be able to make contributions.

If you think you might be up to the job, please contact Mary-Jane via for more information.

Repair cafe update

Our Repair Cafe was due to launch on July 3rd but due to the latest government restrictions, we have decided to keep safe and we are now aiming to kick it off in September, continuing with the planned schedule of the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 12:30.

We have a brilliant team of volunteers raring to go and they can't wait to start repairing your household items and toys.

We are always happy to hear from you or anyone you know who would like to volunteer as a repairer. Typically, we need electronic, electrical, mechanical and sewing/tailoring skills, and an inquisitive mind.
