Thank you and farewell
Near FM has said hello and goodbye to a number of interns this summer. Thank you to Lisa Will, Stella Gebauer, Shane O’Neill, Grainne Kelly and Yasmina Tawil.
And a very special goodbye and good luck to Ray Burke who has left Near FM and Dublin to take up his new position as station manager of Wired FM in Limerick and Lidija Radicic who presented the last episode of “Balkan Beatz” this month.
Europe on Air (March - July 2014)
The Europe on Air series looked at Ireland and the impact of the EU in relation to a wide variety of topics. In the twenty half-hour programmes the guests discussed issues which included EU citizenship, migration, food production, the Irish fishing industry, education, mental health, mass media, religion, environmental matters, the economic crisis, gender and sexuality, Irish language, culture and history. Because it dealt with such a wide variety of topics and it went outside the usual pool of NEAR FM contacts, this was a challenging and stimulating series to produce.
It is difficult to highlight any particular programme from the series as each was unique and special in its own way. However, one example is the programme which looked at the changing face of religion in Ireland. This brought together guests from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths and there was a fascinating discussion on Ireland and Irish traditions from the perspective of each different faith, both from the point of view of growing up in Ireland and in the context of the present day.
Volunteer Interview: Joe Byrne
What is your favorite book?
Beauty and Atrocity by Joshua Levine
What was the last piece of music you remember listening to?
Your Mother And Mine
Where is the most exciting place you have visited?
Cape Town, South Africa
Tell us about the best program you have had.
I like to think that all the programs I did were the best, but sometimes I can leave the station knowing I could have done better. To be honest I will say the 2nd program I did under the watchful eye of Philip McGibney. I got to present the second half of the show, a tribute to Philip Lynott on his birthday. It was a dream come through, went home, had a tear. Magic.
What's the most inspiring feedback you have received from listeners?
You’re not bad, like your music.
Do you volunteer with any other organisation?
No. Only to do house work.
Joe presents “Off the Shelf” alternate Saturdays 9.30 a.m. – 10.30 a.m.
