NEWS UPDATE   September 2015

During the summer we were out and about across the community. Near FM also celebrated its 20th year on air with a number of special programmes, and we had a great evening in the community garden at the CDC, where we planted a tree to mark Near20. Weather wasn’t too bad, but the pizzas were great !  We tried to mark the 20 years with a number of events, and I hope you managed to get along to at least one of them. Watch out for the Education Conference in November and our annual hooley in December.

The Near Drama Company

The Near Drama Company is very busy at present.

Near FM was successful in the last round of the BAI Sound & Vision Fund in achieving support for two radio drama projects. Both plays were written by Jack Byrne.  The first project is a trilogy of environmental plays, which will be broadcast during the last week in November just before the World Climate Conference in Paris. This will be our contribution to the current live debate on environmental matters exercising many world leaders.

The second drama features the 1916 Rebellion and feature a very novel approach to that major event in Irish history. It is planned to broadcast this around Easter next year.

A new series of 'Curtain Up' commenced on 22 August and is running for 13 weeks. This programme is broadcast live on Saturday mornings between 11.30am - 12.30pm. The series concentrates on amateur performances - stage drama, radio drama, choral, musical - along with short stories, poetry and interviews.

Happy Birthday Near FM!
Near FM turned 20 last month. To mark this milestone in the history of community media in Dublin and Ireland we had a great night out in the Wiley Fox on September 11th. Performances on the night came from a very talented bunch of Near FM volunteers including Pat Farrell’s ‘Dublin Blues Cartel’, Aoife Nic Canna, Noel McGuinness, Ska Patrol DJs, Lost Radio Outpost DJ’s and Neon Room DJ’s. And a post party sing along in the bus shelter ;)

Training

Near FM will be running a radio training course for people aged 55+. This course is a QQI Level 3 accredited course in 'Media Expression' and is aimed at people who would like to see a change in their community and want to be part of that change. It's about making radio that matters and giving people a chance to have their say.

The course will start on Wednesday, 7th October and will be held from 9.30am to 1pm every Wednesday morning for 10 weeks.

This course will facilitate participants to make great radio; engaging those listening while making a compelling case for change. It will give participants an introduction to advocacy, media and radio production and will hopefully inspire and equip participants to get involved in advocating for change on issues that matter to them, and enthuse them about the power of community media.

This course is FREE and places are limited.

As the course is starting in just a few weeks time, people who may be interested register you interest as soon as possible, and contact us here at Near FM by emailing publicity@near.ie or call Adrianne for further details and to register on (01) 5079841

Volunteer Interview

Dave O’Connor – Classic Rock Radio, Fridays at 9.30pm

Near’s Golden Years, Saturdays at 8.00am

Q. What is your favorite movie?

A. The Great Escape, particularly the Steve Mc Queen motorbike scene.

Q. What was the last piece of music you remember listening to?

A. The new Strypes album, track 12, Scumbag City is a must listen.

Q. Where is the most exciting place you have visited?

A. Toronto, Canada. My wife has family there.

Q. What is your programme about?

A. 90 minutes !!  Sorry, not comedy anyway. It's just great oldies on a Saturday morning. I always feature music that has a relevance to the date so, birthdays, anniversaries, Number 1's. I also enjoy playing classic rock on the odd Friday night.

Q. Why did you first get involved with Near FM?

A. I was involved with NDCR ( the pirate community radio before Near FM) in 1985 and was presenting a youth program, got the bug for community radio, got involved with the committee, and have been with Near as it was named in 1995 ever since.

Q. Tell us about the best program you have had.

A. Getting the Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar in to play classic rock was a bit of craic, he's a huge Blur fan.

Q. What's the most inspiring feedback you have received from listeners?

A. I use twitter a lot, so anytime I get feedback or retweets, that's always good

Q. What other Near FM programs do you listen to?

A. The Album Show with Pat Kearney, Pat and I are friends for over 30 years, and I've always liked the music he plays. Try to hear the Arts Show too. Generally, listen back to podcasts as well.

Q. Do you volunteer with any other organizations?

A. Don’t have the time anymore, but I did volunteer with the ISPCC for 10 years in the 90's, and St Vincent de Paul (Sunshine House) for a few years where I met my wife.

Friends of Near is progressing well.   Lots of people have signed up and we intend that this will gradually become an important source of funding, which will make us a more robust and independent media co-op.   Support from our volunteers and community helps make us what we are. You can get more details about signing up at www.nearfm.ie/friends

Thanks to Northside People for covering our Near20 celebrations.

Among the many organisations featured we had Dublinia, Revenue Museum, Marsh’s Library, City Hall, Dublin Food Co-op, The Lantern Centre, St Audeons Church, Telling Whiskey Distillery, Fumbally Stables, Design Hub,  St Patrick’s Cathedral, Christchurch, TOG, Lazy Bike Tours, Dublin Castle and live music from Sinead White, Barry Jay Hughes, Kate Dineen, Gráinne Hunt and Emma O’Reilly.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our hosts NCAD for having us and Culture Night and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland for their continued support for this unique broadcasting venture. We will eb back in 2016 broadcasting form a new venue and a new cultural quarter so watch this space.
