Take Action To Stop Online Sex Trafficking

Children are bought and sold for sex on Backpage, the market leader for sex ads. Several of these children have filed lawsuits against Backpage. However, most of their cases have been dismissed under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects websites from claims involving third-party content.  Meaning that it is legal in this country to host ads selling children.  There is now growing support in Congress to narrowly amend Section 230 so that victims of trafficking can sue websites involved in criminal activity. But Google and others have refused to work on this bill and have launched a robust disinformation campaign, claiming that the internet will break or that free speech online will disappear.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Please tell our Senators to support the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act of 2017 and arm them with the facts.

Here’s an article to read more about this: https://www.lennyletter.com/story/sesta-stop-protecting-sex-trafficking-websites

Keep your eyes open for a future email with more resources on sex trafficking.

Advocacy Article
Stat News recently published this article titled "Grassroots group tries to get a new kind of doctor in the House (and Senate)". It is a great article that brings up some important points. Below is a snippet from the article:

"Women are missing from public debate and physicians are missing. Given that a sixth of the American economy is health care, I think it’s time that [women] physicians step into the arena and tell the stories of what happens with patients, and bring that lens of problem solving to public discourse."

Meet our Officers: Yutika Diwadkar
Yutika is our Region 8 Director. She currently a student at The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in psychology and aspires to be an OBGYN. In addition to being a regional director, she is a part of PATH- Physicians Against Trafficking of Humans. "I have incorporated PATH into my AMWA chapter and I'm starting a clothing drive that will continue throughout the year along with going to hospitals/clinics to discuss the importance of PATH training." Yutika joined AMWA last January in hopes of meeting other women in medicine who have similar motivations to become a physician. "Ever since I've joined AMWA, my decision to become a physician has become even more solidified as I see so many successful and incredible women that have accomplished so much and done so much to contribute to the well-being of other women and individuals."

When asked for advice she would give to younger women, she replied "Being a pre-medical student is extremely tough at times and can often make you question whether it's worth it to even become a physician, but it's important to remember why you want to join the medical field. Join organizations like AMWA where you see other individuals just like yourself working just as hard to achieve similar goals. It will continue to motivate you. "

We are lucky to have Yutika on our Regional Director Team!
