Advocacy Corner

Our hearts are with Las Vegas as we are reminded yet again of the devastating effects of gun violence. However, thoughts and prayers are not enough and we need policy change. AMWA Pre-Med and the AMWA Gun Violence Task Force urge you to contact your senators and push for common-sense action.

AMWA Pre-med's Advocacy Chair, Yasamin, is trying to get a committee going for this year! We have some awesome upcoming projects and would love your help. Some upcoming projects include planning an advocacy day at the Hill, a mental health in medicine social media campaign, an advocacy toolkit, and toolkit (letter, fact sheet) on the wage gap. Please email Yasamin at premedadvocacy@amwa-premed.org if you are interested in joining the committee and helping out on these projects or any other ideas you may have.

AMWA Binghamton Involvement
AMWA Binghamton participated in the Broome County CHOW® Hunger Walk, inspired by AMWA's theme of prevention of childhood obesity. In honor of the healthy diet initiative, they are also holding a fundraiser with Core Life (a local healthy restaurant), in which the proceeds will go to CHOW®. For every dollar donated to the CHOW® Hunger Walk, CHOW® can purchase $7 worth of food or provide four additional meals.

Meet our Officers: Lauren Katzell
Lauren is our newly promoted co-president for the Pre-Medical Division. She currently is a junior at the University of Florida, majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She hopes to become a physician while continuing to provide a voice for children and women in medicine. Lauren joined AMWA in her senior year of high school, as Dr. Haffizulla (past AMWA president) was her mentor. "Mentorship drew me to AMWA, but the lifelong bonds I have formed with fellow AMWA members all across the country has solidified my involvement."  In her free time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with family.

When asked for advice she would give to younger women, she replied "Get involved and start connecting with others! It's never too early to get involved with AMWA, and you will meet so many amazing people."

If she were to meet any iconic woman in history, it would be: "Elizabeth Blackwell because she was the first woman to receive a medical degree in America, paving the way for future female physicians."

Lauren is a vital part of our team and we are so happy to have her!
