Don't forget the bubbles!

Let's play outside!

This month we invited ourselves along to the picnic of one our favorite families. Craig, a software developer, and Celeste, a writer and editor, brought their adorable kiddos to a local park on a sunny day for some slidin', some bubble-blowin', and some serious outdoor noshin'.

The Food

Kid-friendly means keeping it simple. We used mostly finger foods, packed a couple of ice packs to keep things cool, and paired healthy items with just a couple treats.

The Activities

The park was a great spot to spend the afternoon, since it has a swing set, a slide, and a seesaw to help kids work up an appetite. We brought a few additional activities with us:
  • Hula hoops
  • Jump ropes
  • Bubbles
  • A mini-accordion (it was quiet so as to not disturb other park dwellers!)

More kid-friendly tips

  • You can always add a bit of adventure by making the destination a surprise. Plan to slowly reveal clues on the way and see if your kids can guess where you're going.
  • Let your little ones bring their stuffed animals and make it a teddy bear picnic!
  • This might go without saying, but don't forget to bring baby wipes for fast clean-up.
  • All the usual outdoor stuff applies: bring sunscreen, hats, and lots of water.
  • Continue the fun by reading one of these picnic-themed books during your bedtime story.
We'd love to know what kinds of picnics you're throwing! Share photos, recipes, and tips using the hashtag #thepicnicsociety.

We've extended the deadline for becoming eligible to win a picnic basket loaded with goodies. Forward this email to your friends. If they join the Picnic Society before the end of May, they'll have a chance to win! (And, hey, maybe they'll share with you.)
