KND: Autumn Newsletter
KERRY NICHOLLS DANCE

October Newsletter '14

A big hello to all KND followers!

It seems a long while since we sent out our last newsletter and we have of course enjoyed many experiences moving and shaking with you all since then.
In a very small nutshell, here are a few of the things that we have we been up to....

  • Scottish Ballet commission – the creation of a new piece 'Sempahore' to celebrate the Commonwealth Youth Exchange in Glasgow with twenty one young people from Scotland and Singapore (more below).

  • ENBS commission – choreographed an original work 'Metanoia' for 3rd year students which was performed in their graduation showcase at Wimbledon Theatre: https://vimeo.com/107408654

  • Lectured at the Milano City Ballet Summer School with over fifty young Italian dancers, teaching technique and creating a short work that was performed at the final gala.

Kerry spent an exciting few weeks (staying with a barrister in a stunning West End apartment) in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Youth Exchange. Commissioned by Scottish Ballet, Kerry created an original work with dancers from Singapore (SOTA and THE) and a vibrant cohort of young people chosen by Scottish Ballet. Working with this eager group remains a particular highlight of the year thus far! That said, the whole festival was a joy to be a part of and a great celebration of all the fantastic youth dance work happening inside the Commonwealth. It was a great opportunity to network and share some of the stunning pieces that were presented. Here's a Vimeo Link to watch a short film documenting some of Kerry's experiences in Glasgow this summer: https://vimeo.com/107515615

KND's biggest venture to date was the commencement of our Performance Mentoring Programme. August heralded the launch of our pilot for the scheme, which was generously supported by the Linbury Trust. We eagerly started the project with a full and intensive two weeks of activity with thought-provoking workshops, insights and inspiration from guest teachers, and excellent feedback and networking opportunities. With an amazing guest faculty line-up working alongside Kerry – such as Lloyd Newson and Hannes Langolf, Melanie Pappenheim and Emma Bernard, Cat Alip-Douglas, Antonia Franceschi, Theresa Beattie, Dan Ellis and David Walters – the fourteen strong cohort were supported and confronted in equal measure and each of them magnificently rose to the challenge.

KND are delighted with the progress made during this studio-centric portion of the programme - a huge thank you to all guest artists and heartfelt applause to the first cohort of professionals – genuine thanks for taking part. They are a superbly open and talented group of artists from varied backgrounds and Kerry is relishing the continuation of the process during these next three months of mentoring with them, so as to carry on supporting their new thinking.
A film should be available to view on the website shortly if you want to know more about the initiative. Do take a peek!

The whole experience has been illuminating. Kerry is totally unique – she is the only person capable of leading and mentoring in this way which makes her invaluable to the dance world.”

The PMP has made me feel and think completely differently about myself and my career in an extremely positive way. The need for a programme of this calibre should not be underestimated.”

Our KND Summer Programme 2014 ran parallel to this, and was once again held at the company home of English National Ballet. We shared lots of exuberant dancing at Jay Mews in our annual masterclasses, driven by inspirational live music from David Walters. As last year, we attracted dancers of high calibre and the mornings were full of keen professionals working hard within this two hour class setting. Old friends and new faces came from across the world to join us, guaranteeing brilliant dancing and camaraderie! This annual meeting of body and mind is becoming a climactic event in KND's year and it remains wonderful to share with such talent – deep gratitude to all who were a part of it.

Kerry is a stimulating teacher and actively challenges you to work at your best, pushing you to go further than you thought possible.

I travelled down the country especially for Kerry's class. She is an engaging teacher and David's music is so intricate. The combination of the two makes for a true challenge, mentally, physically and artistically.”

Big News!
Kerry has been appointed the Artistic Director of National Youth Dance Wales for 2014-2015. She will be devising and delivering the curriculum for the Step-Up programme, in addition to auditioning and selecting the cast of National Youth Dance Company Wales 2015 and creating a work with the company to tour next summer. Kerry is thrilled that she has been offered this opportunity to work intensively with young, aspiring dancers and looks forward to working with Welsh home-grown talent within this arena. You will hear more about it as the year unfolds.

Current Activity
Kerry is preparing to dive into her next choreographic commission this autumn with Verve '15. She is working with this dynamic group of graduate dancers in Leeds throughout October and is enthusiastic about sharing studio time with them for a heightened, intensive period. You will be able to catch the work nationwide throughout 2015.

To honour the work of the CAT schemes nationwide, Kerry has been
chosen to create a short duet for two second
year students at LCDS for a performance that will be held at St-Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square later in October. Kerry has also returned to the English National Ballet School to continue to lead the choreographic module of the school's curriculum.
