Why Educators and Financial Planning Pros Turn to NEFE’s Financial Workshop Kits

Since the National Endowment for Financial Education released its free, self-contained Financial Workshop Kits in 2011, they’ve been downloaded hundreds of times and impacted hundreds of thousands of people. The kits are specifically designed to help educators, volunteers, and financial professionals fill a need to provide Americans with reliable, unbiased information in an engaging manner.

The Financial Workshop Kits clearly are filling that need according to the more than 150 respondents who participated in a before-use survey. The most popular topic is general financial education (66 percent) closely followed by help for individuals with low incomes (61 percent). Programs for youth and college students are popular as well. At least 10 percent of users were interested in every category of workshop, including health and disability, aging, diversity, and retirement.

As indicated by respondents’ preference for general financial interest topics, the most popular workshop is Budgeting: Keeping Track of Your Money, with nearly 75 percent planning to download it. More than 50 percent showed interest in downloading Family Money Skills, 40 Money Management Tips, and Income Savings and Assets as well. Nearly every Financial Workshop Kit piques the interest of at least 10 percent of users.

NEFE’s Financial Workshop Kits are continually attracting new users, with 87.8 percent of survey respondents being first-time visitors to the site. Almost half the users are professional financial educators followed by about one-third social services professionals. The remainder of users tend to be financial planners and community volunteers. Financial Workshop Kit users rely on NEFE materials and conduct the workshops as part of their job (53 percent) or as a volunteer (47 percent).

NEFE plans to continue creating and fine-tuning its workshops to impact the maximum amount of people and improve their lives through sound money management skills.
