GONG Communications
Making some noise about Gong   |   Issue 8   |   October 2015
Here at Gong, we admire an entrepreneurial spirit. One of our observations is that they are as often to be found inside a big company as a small one.
To celebrate that attitude and, let’s face it, the sheer determination that it takes to improve upon an existing formula for business success, we have launched our very own Challenger Project.

Our mission is to find and share some new stories of inspiration and innovation. We get a kick from understanding what drives people to do things differently and better.

Dive In Festival
Lloyd’s handed us the brief to work on the first sector-wide diversity and inclusion festival for insurance.
We developed the Dive In brand, and managed the Festival communications and collateral to raise awareness that D&I is good for business. From flash mob to coffee cart, from web site to festival programme, we grabbed pretty much every available inch of physical and digital real estate for the four day event that ran at the end of September. More than 1700 people attended and 90% said they had improved their D&I knowledge with 97% saying they’d come again. Which is just as well, because new dates have just been announced for 2016! Watch the ‘festcam’ 2 min highlights here.
Kenya Spotlight
Elsewhere in the world, it has been a busy few months for the Kenya team with the soft launch and the official opening on September 9th of the largest retail mall to date in East Africa – Nairobi Garden City.
And on the subject of launches and grand openings, we are also excited to be working with African Speakers & Artists, the home of East Africa’s leading talent for business speakers and performers. If you are looking for an African perspective, we’ll put you in touch.
A Portfolio Perspective
As our global agribusiness client Olam celebrates its 25th year, we have helped build a unique ‘Portfolio of Perspectives’.
Short essays from leading players on global issues, focussing on the theme of ‘transcending boundaries’, are helping to reinforce that we need cross sector collaboration to address fundamental issues such as food security. Visit the website here to view contributions from a diverse range of perspectives, from Unilever CEO, Paul Polman to Jim Rogers, co-founder of the Quantum Fund.
Iran: The New Frontier
Speak to any emerging markets investor and they will bemoan the lack of reliable consumer data, so when OnDevice Research approached us to work on their Iran project, we jumped at the chance.
We were privileged to provide input into the questions and the results didn’t disappoint! The FT, BBC and CNN ran the results of a 1000 strong survey which uncovered that Iranians aspire to German cars post sanctions! And OnDevice has reported new client wins as a result.
Rwanda calling: African Entrepreneurship Collective
Gong has launched a long term mentoring partnership with African Entrepreneur Collective, a collection of business accelerators that support entrepreneurs to drive job growth.
The first Gong mentor will head to Rwanda in January 2016 to spend a month working with local entrepreneurs on communications strategies for growth. The Kigali-based charity was co-founded by previous Gong client Sara Leedom and we are excited to be working together once again!
