A message from Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin:

McLaughlinBy now you should have received a letter or email from me introducing VCU Athletics’ new sport-specific fundraising program. The No. 1 priority of this initiative is to reconnect former student-athletes with VCU Athletics and have alumni like you serve as a part of our success in the future.

To review, the goals of this program are:
  • Connecting and reconnecting with student-athlete alumni
  • Connecting and reconnecting student-athlete alumni with one another
  • Connecting student-athlete alumni with current student-athletes to act as mentors and to assist with employment opportunities following graduation
  • Raising money to improve the experience of our current student-athletes
As part of this process, a staff member from VCU Athletics’ development office will work with every sports program. This administrator will serve as a liaison between the coaches and the alumni. Each head coach has defined short-term and long-term financial priorities so you know our program needs and where your financial support is going.

VCU Athletics will send you as many as four sport-specific newsletters (the first of which is below) each year to improve communication with you and to update you on the tremendous accomplishments of our student-athletes. We will also host one signature event each year on campus for each sport.

Our goals as an athletics program and a university have never been higher. Your support and participation in this program are essential to us achieving those goals. I look forward to meeting you soon and Go Rams!

A message from head coach Jon Riley:

Dear VCU track and field and cross-country alumni,

RileyLike most small college track teams these days, our operating budget is stretched to the limit by the basics. This past season went very well for the team but we unfortunately exhausted the funds in our already underfunded budget.

Despite a tremendous need, the track and cross-country teams receive little financial support from alumni and donors, but we hope to change that. With your help, we can turn a good season into a great one. We’re doing all we can to bring in funds on our own (hopefully, with a big baton exchange from supporters like you).

As a former student-athlete, you surely remember all too well the challenges we faced because of budget issues.

Nevertheless, just as you did, our student-athletes look beyond the obstacles and continue to excel programmatically. As some of you might have already heard, one of our own qualified for the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in the summer of 2012.  We think Kiara Porter and a few others will be nationally competitive this year, traveling throughout the U.S., and hopefully abroad, for competitions.

Please consider helping to enhance today’s student-athletes’ experience by making a donation to fund  essential needs, such as long-distance competition trips (visits to New Mexico, Oregon, Kentucky and New York City for the New Balance Armory Classic and Penn Relays are on tap) and vital team gear (warm-ups, new uniforms and travel bags).

I want to share some of the team’s accomplishments from this past season:

• 24 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll
• 35 student-athletes on the AD’s Honor Roll
• 13 student-athletes on the Dean’s List
• 2 female student-athletes advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and earned All-American honors
• 14 student-athletes earned 1st Team All-A-10
• 42 student-athletes posted a total of 120 personal best times and marks
• 65 times, our student-athletes finished first in their event
Every member of our team takes a great deal of pride in the privilege of being a student-athlete at VCU, and every one of the VCU cross-country and track and field student-athletes appreciates your support. I hope you will consider making a gift to VCU Athletics by becoming a member of the Friends of VCU Track & Field and Cross Country.

Heart, intensity and commitment will always be our most important keys to victory but knowing that you are supporting us as a Friend of VCU Track & Field and Cross Country also will help us succeed. Give now.

Thank you for your support. We will do our best to make you proud!
