Join us at the grand opening celebration for the Langston Center for Quality, Safety and Innovation


The VCU School of Nursing will hold a grand-opening celebration for the Langston Center for Quality, Safety and Innovation 2:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Younger Auditorium.

Diana J. Mason, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, president of the American Academy of Nursing, will present a keynote address, “Envisioning Healthcare Organizations to Achieve the Triple Aim,” followed by a panel discussion and reception. Joanne Disch, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, professor ad honorem at the University of Minnesota, will moderate the panel. Panelists are:
  • Marcus Messner, Ph.D., executive director of the VCU Center for Media + Health
  • Alan Dow, M.D., M.S.H.A., director of the VCU IPE and Center for Collaborative Care
  • Norma Lang, Ph.D., FAAN, FRCN, RN, dean and professor emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Pennsylvania

The Langston Center is named in honor of Nancy Langston, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, ANEF, who retired in 2013 after 22 years as dean. RSVPs for the grand opening would be appreciated by Oct. 15 at sonlcqsi@vcu.edu.
 
 

Debra Barksdale appointed associate dean of academic programs


Debra Barksdale The VCU School of Nursing has appointed Debra J. Barksdale, Ph.D., FNP-BC, ANP-BC, CNE, FAANP, FAAN, a nationally known educator, researcher, practitioner and advocate for improving health care, as associate dean of academic programs and professor. Barksdale is currently professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing.

“We are pleased to welcome Debra to the School of Nursing as she is truly an innovative thought leader in nursing education,” said Jean Giddens, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, professor, dean and Doris B. Yingling Endowed Chair. “Her stellar record of working to transform health care will be a huge asset to shaping our current and future academic programs.”

Barksdale is the immediate past president of the prestigious National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows alumna. Her research focuses on stress and cardiovascular disease in Black Americans.

Wilsie Bishop to receive Alumni Star award


Wilsie Bishop Wilsie S. Bishop, D.P.A. (B.S.’70/N; M.S.’78/N), vice president for health affairs and the chief operating officer at East Tennessee State University, will be recognized Nov. 6 at the VCU Alumni Stars event. The Alumni Star award recognizes alumni for their career and humanitarian achievements as well as the infinite possibilities they bring to the future.

The event is at The John Marshall Ballrooms in Richmond, Virginia. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails followed by a seated dinner and program. Tickets are $100 each or a table of 10 can be purchased or sponsored for $1,000. Purchase your tickets by Oct. 28.

Master's, doctoral programs open houses set


Are you considering advancing your nursing education beyond the baccalaureate level? Are you interested in obtaining a doctorate? The Office of Enrollment and Student Services is hosting an M.S. open house 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, and a Ph.D. and DNP open house 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. RSVP online.
