Alumni Profile - Neil Duman
Despite demonstrating artistic talent from a young age, Neil Duman (B.F.A.’77/A) never pictured himself as a professional artist. He enrolled at VCU with plans to pursue a career in art therapy but soon discovered his love for glassblowing. The passion for working with glass that ignited at VCU still burns strong for Duman nearly four decades later. From the furnaces in his Waynesboro, Virginia, hot shop, he shapes and molds molten glass into one-of-a-kind sculptures, including the award for this year’s VCU Alumni Stars.

CampusConnection - Qatar Day
It’s easy for medical students to get bogged down in the demanding daily requirements of their education. At the VCU School of Medicine, however, students took a break from the books on Oct. 23 for the annual Day of Community Service event. Despite a just-completed renal physiology exam for second-year med students and an upcoming micro immunology test for first years, 150 future physicians ventured out to serve the Richmond community they now call home. Students from all of the classes lent their hands to five area nonprofits and organizations. Projects included building a giant Jenga game for the Patrick Henry YMCA (pictured), working with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to build vegetable garden boxes for Second Baptist Church’s program to grow food for the homeless and prepping the Salvation Army’s Christmas distribution center for the anticipated flood of toys.
