Campus Connection
Interconnected strings of pink yarn formed a canopy on the lawn outside James Branch Cabell Library in November as part of a public interactive art project. The UNITY Project featured a circular arrangement of 32 poles, each labeled with an identifier, such as “I’m a parent,” “I identify as LGBTQ” or “I speak English as a second language.” The canopy formed as participants tied a string of yarn around the poles they identified with, demonstrating how individual differences can connect and bring people together. Artist Nancy Belmont created the first UNITY Project art installation in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia, in June. Since then, it has been replicated in nearly 600 cities in 21 countries around the world.
