Former student-athletes Rob Brandenberg (B.I.S.’13/H&S) and Darrell “D.J.” Haley (B.I.S.’13/H&S) were searching for a way to give back to the Richmond community that had supported them during their time at Virginia Commonwealth University. That’s when they came up with the idea for a free social loyalty program. With fellow alumnus Jeremy Senseng (B.S.’11/H&S) in tow, the trio are hoping to empower consumers by providing them with a sustainable method of giving.

“What kind of therapist will you be?” That was the question Jayne Shepherd (M.S.’82/AHP), associate professor, assistant chair and director of academic fieldwork in the School of Allied Health Professions’ Department of Occupational Therapy, posed to her students in January as they closed out their culminating fieldwork seminar, “Connecting the Dots.” From a grab bag of random toys, the students each selected an item and then shared how it related to the kind of therapist they planned to be. One student chose a heart and said, “I’m going to put my heart into all that I do,” while another picked up a brain and said, “I’ll use my brain to find evidence-based practice and what makes sense to treat my clients.” Buzz Lightyear prompted a promise to “be a pioneer and do something different.” A few days later, the students participated in a pinning ceremony, a tradition in the occupational therapy discipline that marks their completion of the program.
