Marilyn Tavenner receives AACN Policy Luminary Award

Alumna Marilyn Tavenner (B.S.'83/N; M.H.A.'89/AHP), administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, was recently presented with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Policy Luminary Award. The annual award recognizes a nursing leader whose work in public policy has made lasting and significant contributions to the nursing profession. Tavenner manages all aspects of CMS, the $850 billion federal agency that ensures health care coverage for 100 million Americans. 

Atlanta alumni enjoy time with the dean

Attendees included (from left) Makara Phor (B.S‘11/N), Patrice Harris (B.S.’02/N), Cynthia Frails (B.S.‘94/N), Regina Taylor (B.S’82/N), Dean Jean Giddens, and Nancy Larsen (B.S.’77/N).  Everyone had a great time hearing about the latest happenings at the School of Nursing! Kathy Jones wins teacher of the year award

Congratulations to alumna Kathy Jones (B.S.'71/N) for winning the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year Award at the Chesapeake Center for Science & Technology. Jones teaches “Nursing I” to Chesapeake-area high school students who are enrolled in the CCST program. The Center for Science and Technology is a part of the Chesapeake Public Schools system and is the oldest career and technical school in the commonwealth.

Jeanne Salyer earns a March of Dimes Nurse of the Year award

Jeanne Salyer, Ph.D., RN, FNAP (Ph.D.'93/N), associate professor in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, was one of 21 nurses statewide recognized on Nov. 1 with a Nurse of the Year award from the Central Virginia March of Dimes. Salyer received the Educator/Researcher/Author Award for her contributions to congestive heart failure research and her dedication to nursing education. The Nurse of the Year awards ceremony is a statewide event that recognizes exceptional nurses, creates awareness of professional excellence and promotes the future of nursing, while advancing the mission of the March of Dimes.  Read more about Salyer’s recognition
