Happy New Year!
We are excited and cautiously optimistic about the upcoming legislative session and our priorities reflect that. As an advocacy group, we understand that we must be a voice for Iowa rivers and streams but there is strength in numbers and we need your help!
The 2017 legislative session opens next week on January 9th
and there is a lot of work to be done, so why not get a jump on things? This is where you come in.
PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS ABOUT PRIORITIES THAT MATTER TO YOU! (Here are some of our suggestions):
- Raise the Sales Tax 3/8 of a cent, Fund the Trust, Keep the Formula! (IWILL/Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy/Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund)
- Fully fund REAP (provides essential funding for soil and water conservation, habitat protection and recreation resources)
- $3 million for the DNR’s Low-Head Dam Mitigation and Water Trails program (Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Appropriation that was threatened to be zeroed out last year!)
- Approval of the suggested bag limits and the six-week season closure to protect Iowa wild turtles during the mating and nesting season by the Natural Resource Commission (in January) and the Administrative Rules Review Committee (in February or March) so that the Governor can sign the rules and they can be enacted in 2017.
We have attached a link to our legislative priorities one-pager, as well as the projects in the queue hoping for funding from the Low-Head Dam Mitigation and Water Trails program. Feel free to quote and distribute these fact sheets in your interaction with community leaders, mayors, senators and representatives.
