High School Choice
8th Grade Parents! Three dates you need to know:

Shadow Registration Opens
Wednesday October 7

This year, all LBUSD and non-LBUSD middle school students can sign up for High School Shadow Days. Students have the opportunity to attend two High School Shadow Days of their choice. This is an optional activity for high school sites as space is limited. All registration will be handled via the district website and an online form. Communication regarding shadow attendance and logistics beyond registration is the responsibility of the school site. When IVA students are signing up 1) do not put in a student ID # and 2) select "private school" 3) notify IVA that you will be attending a shadow day at so we can give you an excused absence.

Parent Academy at IVA
Tuesday October 13, 6:30 pm - 8 pm

Join principal Jacquie Bryant and counselor Amos Mikaele as we review the process for LBUSD's High School CHOICE. This meeting will give parents an overview of the process and point out resources that LBUSD has for our parents, along with our own IVA website. This meeting is a part of IVA's support to help our families in the transition to high school. See the table linked here to learn more about the support systems we have in place.

ParentVue Workshop at IVA with Jennifer Brown
Thursday October 15, 5 pm - 6:30 pm

Our ParentVue Workshop at IVA welcomes guest Jennifer Brown, the LBUSD director of High School CHOICE and Parent University, next Thursday. Our 8th grade parents will get technical support for logging into ParentVue and navigating its system.

Website Updates

We've made numerous updates to our IVA website. Under "Academics," you will find our "High School CHOICE" section that gives a brief background of what our 8th grade families should look for when choosing a high school, along with helpful handouts. We've also added a "High School CHOICE" section under the "Events" column where we've listed the full spectrum of High School CHOICE events and key dates to look out for from the beginning of October through mid-February. Any changes or updates we receive from the district will be added to our site throughout the course of the school year.

Dear IVA Families!

State Test Results are coming home today for students who attended IVA last year!! Ready for some acronyms?

The California Department of Education (CDE) recently released Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) data for districts and schools in California. Score reports for students who took their SBA test last year at IVA will be sent home today in the last class of the day. SBA results are also known as CAASPP results (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress). A sample score report can be found here, and a document explaining how to understand the score reports can be found here. There are four achievement levels recorded on the assessment. To learn more about what those levels mean for our students click this link. We are proud of our students’ accomplishments inside and outside of the classroom and will help them navigate their own score reports as we help them navigate the daily assignments, grades, and growth in their habits of learning and thinking.

On Tuesday, October 13th our IVA Parent Academy event will help families understand how to calculate their High School Academic Index (HSAI). LBUSD uses this calculation as a piece of qualifying criteria for 6 specialized programs in LBUSD. Our counselor Mr. Amos Mikaele will begin meeting with student groups soon and throughout this fall to help them understand the high school choices that are available and which would be the best for them. There are a lot of great high school options in LBUSD and we are excited to help students use their intellectual virtues as you navigate together through this decision making process.

To live and learn well,
On Tuesday, Oct. 13. PTSA is having it's first general meeting before Parent Academy. Please join us at 6pm to learn more about PTSA, how you can help, and approve our budget for the year.  We will also have T-shirts and memberships available for purchase. Complimentary coffee will be provided.
We are currently planning for the basketball season.
  • Beginning on October 13, we are going to be holding optional practices once a week on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-5:00pm at IVA for any student interested in practicing and meeting others interested in the team. All are welcome to attend to improve skills and get a head start on the season!
  • The basketball competition season will not officially begin until January, after the Winter Break.
  • Official tryouts will be held on November 17, and the team will be announced by November 20.
  • Practices will switch to twice a week after the Thanksgiving Break.
  • We are looking to begin fundraising for the season ASAP! If you are willing and able to help organize some Thursday after-school fundraising events, please let Ms. McAdams know.
Our cross-country season continues!
  • Optional Practice: Thursday (1:00pm-2:00pm) this week! We will meet, run to Los Cerritos Park for a workout, and run back.
