Back to School Night
The goal of Back to School Night at IVA is to help parents navigate the resources here, understand how to communicate with teachers, and to offer a learning experience in the classroom. We believe the best way you can empathize with your child is to either see what they experience by coming on a school tour - Tuesday mornings at 9 am by reservation - or by experiencing it yourselves. Come and learn how passionate your child’s teachers are for their subject and how students are asked to think and learn in class. There won’t be time for one-on-one parent conferences so please continue to reach out to teachers and office staff directly with any needs. We are looking forward to a week of parent conferences in the spring.

Please remember this is a parent-only event so you have the opportunity to fully experience what we have planned for you. IVA will not be able to provide supervision and there will not be room for kids in the classrooms. We hope to see all of you in the courtyard at 6:30 pm for the courtyard kick off before you head to your student's first class.

From Our Principal
Dear IVA Families!

I want to write this week about encouraging good choices at office hours. We have created office hours as an option for students to get small group support from their teachers. We understand that practicing good choices takes time and we hope you continue to join us in encouraging students to go talk with their teachers.

We are so happy to have our planners as they provide a great space for students to write down notes and questions as reminders for office hours for the week. In order to support good choices, we are changing our free time expectations during office hours for kids who choose not to head into a classroom.

Starting today we will have students sit and play or just chat outside at the tables if they are not going inside in order to maintain an academic environment at the school. As we anticipated, some kids are being drawn to run around for extended play instead of deciding to get support or ask questions of their teachers. Since the pull of playing outside is so great we are limiting the types of play kids can do for those 20 minutes after the first block of the day before their official break. We are hoping that our new “sitting only” policy outside will encourage students to have less of a draw outside and encourage them to make good use of the resources offered during the school day.

Soon there will be a rush of sign ups for office hours as  student begin to work on their end-of-unit assessments. We hope students will take advantage of the resource now before it becomes scarce with the procrastination rush.

To live and learn well,
PTSA will be selling Spirit Wear at Back to School Night and taking pre-orders for our new hoodie! Sweatshirts feature our logo, embroidered on a charcoal gray hoodie and are $35. Due to the limited availability, you must pre-paid by Friday - this is the last chance to order!
Way to run FOXES! We took 29 runners to our first Cross Country meet on Tuesday, September 29 at Kenneth Hahn Park. It was a challenging course will significant inclines. Our thinkers and learners are also movers and they did a fantastic job! Congratulations to Julian, Joshua, Jack and Agnes for earning medals in their division! View FIYA's photos here and race results here.
FUN Thursdays
For a 3rd week our Fun Thursday FUN-raiser: Fudgesicles, Big Sticks, and Orange Push-up Pops for Sale $1.50. Thank you for supporting our Cross Country team last Thursday and this week on Fun Thursday!
After School Academy
Beginning in mid-October, parent volunteers are invited to lead workshops for small groups of students from 3:15-4:15 p.m. (earlier on Thursdays), one day per week, in six-week sessions. We'd love to expand class offerings according to your interests and skills. For inspiration, we'll mention that past topics have included:
  • website design
  • martial arts
  • counseling/process group
  • mock trial
  • house handy skills
  • knitting
  • literary journal
  • yearbook
We've heard ideas to offer neuroscience, typing, dance and language! To indicate your interest in leading an after-school class, please email to Danielle by Thursday, September 24. If you already indicated your interest via our recent volunteer involvement survey, Danielle will be contacting you soon.

We look forward to announcing our After-School Academy activities and inviting your students to participate once we've scheduled our wonderful volunteers!
