From our Principal
How does the environment support the learning?

The office staff is busy working on renovating a new classroom and thanks to the PTSA donation from last year adding new flooring in our downstairs classes!

Our classroom design carefully considers how to place the student community at the center of the thinking of the classroom. These design elements include making student thinking visible through:
  • dry-erase walls where students can come up all at once to share their thoughts,
  • tables that are flexible to work in groups and can be organized so that when a student shares she shares to her peer, instead of just facing her teacher at the front of the room
  • an apple TV that is connected by wifi to students iPads so students can project what they have discovered (iPad carts are 2:1 shared between classes)
  • a thoughtful use of color and space in the room for a sense of openness, creativity, and optimism
For our staff and students, the design of our physical space helps align us to the mission, vision, and values of our school. The classrooms specifically help us create a classroom space marked by openness and respect

We strive for a strong sense of community marked by collaboration, empowerment, and intentional openness and respect for the thinking of others.

If you haven't read our values lately, then I want to redirect you to our website and ask you to consider - what are the values that your work place holds to? How does the physical environment support that?

It is a lot of fun to get to design our space and align the design with our values. Help us get ready!!

We are hosting a family event to help us build the furniture for our new classroom on Monday, August 22nd from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. If you are in town, please bring your toolbox and join us as we build the new tables!

To live and learn well,
Jacquie Bryant
Our staff is working on our student schedules, which will be ready by the first day of school. Student schedules are based on other constraints of the program and where we can consider the preference of families we will do our best to align that with other school-wide constraints.

IVA is pleased to offer the following elective program:
  • Grade 6: 3 sets of 6th-grade students with a student-teacher ratio 26:1*
    • all students will have one semester of Art and one semester of Coding
      • in no particular order fall/spring
  • Grade 7: 2 sets of students with a student-teacher ratio 28:1
    • all students will have a semester of Creative Writing and either Coding or Art as their other semester.
  • Grade 8: 2 sets of students with a student-teacher ratio 28:1
    • year-long Spanish I elective (this counts for high school A-G credit) OR
    • Photo in the fall, Interpersonal Communication in the spring
      • preference survey will be sent out this week
Elective curriculum at IVA is carefully designed to provide students an opportunity for deep understanding of the content. All classes are aligned with the common core standards, utilize thinking routines, and depend on a mixture of writing and other creative products for grading. While not sacrificing opportunities to think, learn, and understand deeply, our staff does make grading concessions in electives which include mostly in-class end-of-unit performance assessments and limited home thinking. IVA staff will be publishing the curriculum and syllabi for all classes on the curriculum page of our website before the first day of school. If you have questions or need clarification please reply to this email and we will include more information in our next newsletter.

*The IVA Board of Directors approved an incremental increase of students at IVA each year for the next three years while protecting the personalized and family-like culture by increasing our school size and decreasing our student-teacher ratio. This decision will require around $63,000 to be raised by our BOD annually in order to cover the class size reduction cost. If you are interested in supporting this initiative please contact the school at and we can direct you or please make a Paypal donation on our website. These funds are separate from the enrichment funds that our PTSA seeks annually to provide for field trips, outdoor furniture, classroom enrichment for each teacher, student planners, PE & blacktop equipment, student events, 8th grade promotion and much more.
PTSA will be available before and after the Parent Orientation on August 23rd to provide information for volunteer opportunities, and collect dues for PTSA Memberships and ASB fees. ABS Fee will be $40 per student and will cover the cost of the student's yearbook and all student dances.
Orientation - August 23rd at 9:00 am
New students - remember to come to Orientation on August 23rd 9:00am to Noon to get to know IVA students, meet your teachers, tie-dye your own IVA t-shirt, and play! Parent Orientation is from 11:00am until Noon.
