POW Night for Parents
Thu, Sep 15th - Tomorrow night!
6:30 - 8:00 pm
IVA Social Hall

New families please join our math teachers, Ms. Cari Noble and Ms. Deborah Chen, to learn how to help your student with math at IVA.

POWs are Problems of the Week(s) and are assigned in math class to support the mathematical practices that are asked of students. These are difficult extended problems that require students to problem-solve, communicate math in writing, and practice the challenging intellectual virtues of autonomy and tenacity.

This is a parent-only event! (we don't want to give away the answers! Please don't bring your students so  the teachers can guide you on how to help your kids without giving them the answers;)

Choice Lunch

Have you tried Choicelunch?
Hot (and cold) lunch is served everyday at IVA! Here are some questions you may have:

1. When is the deadline for ordering a lunch? 9:00 am the day before lunch is needed (ex: Sunday at 9am for Monday lunch)
2. What if I miss the 9am deadline? You may place an order for a Last Minute lunch up until 6:00 am the day lunch is needed. Only a limited number of menu items will be available, and there will be an additional fee of $1.50.
3. Are emergency lunches available if I miss the deadline? Yes! Only students may request an emergency lunch. We cannot guarantee that emergency lunches will be available. The student's account will be charged the cost of the meal plus a fee of $1.50 (so approximately $7.00 for an emergency lunch). If you do not want your child to receive an emergency lunch, please OPT OUT of the Emergency Lunches Program by logging in to your Choicelunch.com account, then go to Manage Account.

Read some Frequently Asked Questions to understand more about how Choicelunch works.

Did you know you can receive an email alert to remind you that you ordered lunch? To receive a reminder, log in to your Choicelunch.com account, click the Manage Account and look for Communication Preferences.

Did you know you can earn lunch credit by volunteering for 30 minutes during a lunch period? Email Serena Buie to learn more.

Get involved and support your school at the upcoming Benefit Gala on October 8th from 6pm to 10pm at IVA. We are looking to our amazing parents to bring in Silent and Live Auction items to help our school raise the money needed to provide excellent and innovative education to our students. If you have any contacts or wish to volunteer please email Stephanie Robinette or call her at 310.367.3528.
Counselor's Corner : School of Choice
8th grade families --- If your 8th grade student will apply to high schools in LBUSD, you will need an active ParentVue account to do so. Please check to see if your account is active.

Please note: your 8th grade student's information will not be displayed and will be available before the application window opens in December.

If you need support with creating a new ParentVue account, or logging in to an existing account, we are coordinating with LBUSD available dates in the upcoming weeks for them to schedule appointments over the phone or in person at their office (1515 Hughes Way, Long Beach, CA 90810) with each 8th grade family. The purpose for this appointment is solely for ParentVue activation, as the School of Choice staff will not have current information for high school pathway programs (Small Learning Communities and Specialized Secondary Programs) until October.

We will be sure to communicate all information needed for meeting with LBUSD staff for access and activation to your ParentVue account once appointment dates are confirmed.

School Messenger Alerts via Text!
If you haven't already opted in for texts, you may text 67587 and in the message line simply write the words OPT IN. Please note IVA has not sent any School Messenger alert texts. We'll send a test text on Sep 22nd.

Pick-up and Drop-off on Elm
A reminder: our staff is present to support a safe entry and exit to school but you can help too.
  • Please drive to a curb to pick up your child (Elm street has a lot of available space right after 37th street). Consider making a plan with your child to have a pick up location.
  • Encourage students to cross at the stop sign only. Elm is a thin street and with all the traffic it is hard to see students walking across the street.
  • Volunteers Needed! We are looking for a small group of parents to help direct traffic before and after school. If you are interested please email Diana Bosetti and she will help coordinate your support.
Will You Write a Letter of Support?
We'd love to share with our Charter authorizer, LBUSD, what IVA has meant to you, your student, and your family. Would you consider writing a letter? Our requested deadline is Monday, September 26. If interested, please send an email to Danielle Montiel. Thank you for considering!
From Our Principal
I wanted to share an story with you (with permission from the parents!!
Logan's parents wrote this fantastic note:

"If I could have let everyone know that Logan took himself to bed early last night just so Tuesday morning and school would come faster, I would have shouted it from the rooftops. :-)

Normally he's the kid that fights with you every night about bedtime, even thought it's the same time every night, and he is asleep 5 minutes after he hits the pillow, but he still puts up a fight. So to want to go to bed just so school would get here faster.... I was speechless, and that doesn't happen often!!!!

Last year was a very, very hard year. So many things were wrong about it. The worst was seeing this light in
Logan that he carries around with him, go out. It was so hard to watch, and have no way to fix it. We have already seen the light in him return and we couldn't be more grateful! Annie and Logan have been great friends since kindergarten so to have them back at the same school, I just love it! Thank you Mrs. Bryant, and thank you IVA. I guess I just needed to let you know where we were coming from!

Good night,
Alyssa and Brian LeCesne"

I am so grateful to be a part of an organization that changes lives! Share your stories with us! We would love to hear them.

To learn and live well,
Jacquie Bryant
Athletics
What a great turnout for our first Cross Country practice yesterday! Practices will continue M/W from 3:30-4:30 pm for the remainder of the season.

First meet: Wednesday, September 28th at Kenneth Hahn Park. We will need parent volunteers to help carpool! Athletes MUST ATTEND a practice this week in order to participate in the first meet.

Registration & fees: Great news! Because of PTA fundraising, registration cost is now only $30! Cash or check (made out to IVA) can be submitted to Ms. McAdams or the front office. Registration includes all meets and a jersey (if athletes do not already have one).

Parents/guardians, please make sure to complete the transportation and activity waivers that are located in your Illuminate portal.

Please contact Ms. McAdams with any questions.

The ASB fee can be paid up until Friday, October 14th, prior to the Fall Dance on October 21st, but will not be available past this date.

IVA Spirtwear: Pick up of pre-ordered spirit wear will be Thursday, Sept. 15th after school from 12:40 - 1:00 pm at the Elm Street gate. You will see the Red Eye Medial pop up tent. If you can not pick up your order on Thursday you can pick up at Red Eye Media.
Volunteers Needed in our Fine Arts Electives
It is the nature of photography that we will be needing the help of parent volunteers on a regular basis. In order to provide the most experiential and hands-on learning environment as possible, it is imperative at times to have more than one adult in the room or out on a field experience. If you can lend your supervision to us during block 2 on Mondays and Wednesdays (and/or every third Thursday) it would be greatly appreciated. Over the next week, students will be using the dark room in order to develop the paper used in their pinhole cameras. Since the dark room is small, only a limited amount of students can be in there with a chaperone, therefore another adult will need to be with the other students during this time. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are available to support our creative activities!

Contact Ms. Denis or Mr. Fountain directly to sign up for available times.
