High School Choice
8th Grade Parents! We will continue to navigate the High School Choice Process with you

ParentVue Workshop at IVA with Jennifer Brown
Thursday October 15, 5 pm - 6:30 pm

Our ParentVue Workshop at IVA welcomes guest Jennifer Brown, the LBUSD director of High School CHOICE and Parent University, next Thursday. Our 8th grade parents will get technical support for logging into ParentVue and navigating its system.

Website Updates

We've made numerous updates to our IVA website. Under "Academics," you will find our "High School CHOICE" section that gives a brief background of what our 8th grade families should look for when choosing a high school, along with helpful handouts. We've also added a "High School CHOICE" section under the "Events" column where we've listed the full spectrum of High School CHOICE events and key dates to look out for from the beginning of October through mid-February. Any changes or updates we receive from the district will be added to our site throughout the course of the school year.

Collaborative Art Workshop for Students

We have organized an artwork collaborative to make artwork for the IVA Gala. The artists will work with the students to create 7 art pieces that will be auctioned off at our Board-sponsored GALA on October 24th.

Students who are interested in participating in this unique art workshop are invited to stay after school this week on Wednesday until 4:30pm and Friday until 3:45pm

Student Council
Well done to every student who had the courage to give a statement of purpose for our student council elections! Congratulations to our 15 student council members for the 2015-2016 school year. A meeting will be held with Mr. Fountain to determine what position each officer will hold.
Parent Night Out
From Our Principal
Dear IVA Families!

IVA dances are different from middle school dances you may have experienced where boys stand on one side and girls on the other and only a handful of students are bold enough to dance, or maybe ones you've heard of where the music and dancing are too suggestive…instead they are full of running, play, dancing, singing, and a lot of sweating. Our dance this Friday is a Disney theme, which means that students can come dressed as their favorite Disney character, or Star Wars (Disney now owns Star Wars but no weapons please), or even as Steve Jobs because Disney owns stock in Apple. All of these ideas came from students and are completely in line with the sort of fun, creativity, and reason to dance that we want to provide for our kids. If your child does not want to dress to the theme, that's fine too! They needn't dress up to attend the dance. This is a full school event so please make sure that your child comes and doesn’t stay home because they are afraid of what it might be - it will be fun!!

Our dance goes from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. We turn the lights on at 8:40pm so that all students can help clean up (we need to be out of the building by 9:00pm). Please don’t take your kids early! When you arrive ask them - what else can you do to help clean up? We want to continue to get our students involved in creating events for themselves and cleaning up after an event made for them is one of those little ways our kids learn to appreciate the effort that goes into hosting a fun event.

Thank you to our parents who make this dance happen! Emerald Farmer (mom of Reagan and Reina) is leading this dance committee and gathering parents to help make this event a success including those bringing pot luck dishes and chaperoning. Our staff loves to come and dance and bond with students and not have to worry about selling tickets.

To live and learn well,
Jacquie
PTSA News
Welcome to our fall read-a-thon fundraiser through Learn2Earn! Your student received their own unique login this week. Our third annual read-a-thon fosters fundraising in a meaningful and educationally connected way and celebrates a positive reading climate that is natural to students and teachers at Intellectual Virtues Academy.

The PTSA annually funds 6 field trips (3 full school and 3 grade level field trips), classroom enrichment and supplies, outdoor fitness, dances, and club activities. In addition this year we are also looking to fund chairs, tables and lunch benches to compliment the lockers and benches that are on order for our new Fox Corner of the blacktop! If your family wants to sponsor a piece of outdoor furniture in addition to the read-a-thon fundraiser please contact our fundraising chair Janet Watt. We will acknowledge your contribution on our sponsor plaques.
Athletics

Our cross-country team ran Tuesday at their second meet. We are so proud of your effort and sportsmanship.

***
A reminder that optional basketball practices started this Tuesday after school from 3:30pm-5:00pm here at IVA! We are trying to get a head start on the season and all are welcome to attend. Practices will be held weekly on Tuesdays after school for the next couple of weeks. Do not worry if you cannot attend a practice; it does not mean that you will not be allowed to try out for the team.

Evergreens Beach Clean-up
This year, the Evergreens plan to encourage Green Thinking with Evergreen-sponsored activities for the whole school. We will kick it off with at school-wide Beach Clean-Up on October 15 from 1:00-2:30. Everyone is invited, we can carpool to/from IVA, and pizza, fruit and drinks will be provided.  The location is 2300 E Ocean Blvd., in Long Beach (below the LB Museum of Art, parking off Junipero.)  Contact Karen Taylor (562) 225-9991 or karen.taylor@ivalongbeach.org.
Announcements
  • Danielle Montiel is gathering interested parents and their schedules and then we will begin After School Academy in November.
  • NWEA testing is coming up. Students will spend about 3 hours total in their Math, English and History class taking the tests. This won't impact their grades but it will help us gauge their individual academic needs and measure our growth.
