We have two NEW teachers!

Physical Education... Mr. Adam Rodriguez will teach all three PE classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. You might remember Mr. Rodriguez as Mr. McCurry’s long term paternity leave sub.

Ms. Deeble, who has served our students so well, will unfortunately not be able to teach in the morning and afternoon. Ms. Deeble will still be teaching German during the 3rd block to our 8th graders so we are not losing her as a teacher or advisor! And Ms. McAdams, who has been teaching 6 classes without a conference period, will now be able to focus on her current 5 classes and our athletic program as Mr. Rodriguez will be taking her Block 3 PE class of 8th graders.

Mr. Rodriguez bring with him a passion for our school’s vision and a desire to continue to grow as an educator. Mr. Rodriguez comes to us with his bachelors from CSULB where he studied Communications and Journalism, and experience as a coach in track & field, cross country, basketball, and football. In addition, he holds two years experience working as special education instructional aide. During his time with our students in December, Mr. Rodriguez maintained a positive relationship with IVA students and was excited for the character of our students themselves, our school’s expectations of them, and the way that we can support our students by giving them the language of intellectual virtues to know themselves. Mr. Rodriguez has communicated his desire to grow and teach in a methodology aligned with intellectual virtues and is eager to be a part of continued professional development. Mr. Rodriguez is already working with the curriculum direction and support of Ms. McAdams, our PE Department Chair, and Ms. Deeble to help in a smooth transition for our kids.

Pre-Algebra...Last summer, IVA posted a position for a part-time math teacher who would be able to teach pre-algebra. Unfortunately, we were not able to find the perfect person for that job.

But, now we have! We welcome Bob Geminder to our math department team! Mr. Geminder has 10 years of teaching experience in middle school and high school math and science. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mr. Geminder had a long career as an engineer. While he was working as an engineer, he started visiting schools to give presentations on his experience as a Holocaust survivor. In this work, he discovered a meaningful calling to work with children. He has not only a love for math but also a desire to build a caring relationship with students. Mr. Geminder and Ms. Noble have already begun sharing materials and preparing for the new semester.

To live and learn well,
Principal Bryant

Faculty Academy Day
This Friday is our mid-year Faculty Academy meeting. Our teachers will take the full day to sit together and reflect on their personal and professional goals for this semester and then we get to evaluate and address one or two important aspect of our school together.

This Friday's topic for our review is the continue development, implementation, and refinement of our discipline model. We will devote ourselves to examining the current discipline structures, what works, what doesn’t work, and how we can improve. We have prepared by gathering some input from a focus group for our students to get their impressions, reviewing past mid year surveys (the 2016 mid year survey is coming soon), and aligning our expectations with the educational vision of the school.

We understand that these Faculty Academy days, although a break for your kids, are not necessarily a break for you as you find a place for them. Thank you for your flexibility! We appreciate that in choosing IVA as a middle school you have been flexible in many ways and that this adjustments to your schedule is a support for our teachers and school. Thank you for making our growth possible.
New Semester - New Schedule
Before the last day of this semester, this Thursday, we will be passing out new schedules to students. All of our students have a change, whether that means they are moving from art to music or vice versa for 6th and 7th graders, or their class is changing rooms, or they are having a differnt teacher! I am pleased to announce that IVA has hired two new part time teachers who are able to join us for their first day of training this Friday.
High School CHOICE
Families should expect their student's notification of acceptance mid to late February via ParentVUE or by letter to the address on file. All families will receive an acceptance letter. However, if students are accepted to a Secondary Specialized Program, they will have a week to sign their intent to attend. Students accepted to a Small Learning Community do not require a signed intent to attend. Basketball: Practices Monday and Wednesday. In the case of a Monday holiday, practices will most likely be moved to Tuesday and Wednesday. Check your email for more information.

Soccer: We are currently in the beginning planning stages for Spring Soccer and are seeking volunteer coaches. Please contact Ms. McAdams if you are willing and able to coach!
