A letter from Principal Jacquie Bryant

Classroom visitations!

Greetings IVA Families,
Since last week's invitation to visit the classroom we have had 9 parents visit the classroom. These visits are an opportunity for parents to see the environment, curriculum and student engagement in action. Our teachers encourage students to think and question beyond the text through the use of thinking routines. The picture in our newsletter shows how our students' questions and conjectures are gathered and posted in the classroom. Last night, one of our students Delainey Whalen spoke at the IVA Board of Directors meeting. Delainey spoke about the impact IVA has had on her life and the language she uses inside and outside of the classroom.  It can be hard to get the full picture of learning at IVA, but a visit to the classroom can create a more complete picture. Email me to schedule a visit and I will set aside a time that I can walk with you. Visitors to campus need to sign into the main office.

To learn and live well,

Jacquie Bryant, Principal

PTA News!

Dear Parents, Students, Faculty, & Friends,

IVA PTA invites you to join us as we make a positive difference in the education and the quality of life for all children.  We realize how important your children are to you and that you want the best for them.  PTA can help you achieve that goal.

Please know that your support of the IVA PTA, through membership, is critical to our success and the success of many programs we offer your children.  Our goal is to have 100% participation.  This means we would like to have at least one member per student. As an incentive, if we reach our goal of 90% or higher we will be giving a pizza party for the kids.

ANYONE can be a member: teachers, school administrators, students, parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, friends, and even neighbors!  The more members we have, the stronger our voice will be.  We invite you to join the IVA PTA and make a difference.  YOU can enrich the lives of our IVA students.  Our dues are $8 per person.  A portion of the membership fee goes to support and advocate for children on the state and national level.  PTA is a national movement and is the largest non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of ALL children by providing parent resources and legislative power to support youth throughout our Country.  Your membership helps ensure our children’s voices are heard. You can join PTA by filling out the attached envelope and include the dues, either in cash, or check made out to IVA PTA.  Every PTA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your membership is tax deductible.  You might have children in other schools and we encourage you to join each school.

Just because you paid your membership doesn’t mean you have to go to the meetings. We need your support.  Through PTA, we would like to raise funds for our field trips.  We have a 2 fall and spring field trips planned.  Our first field trip is November 5 and 6.  We need to provide transportation for these trips.  A bus costs approximately $500.  For this year, we would really like to raise funds to cover the costs of the bus.  Our long term goal is to have lockers for all 150 students.

Another piece of information, when you fill out your envelope to join, on the back of the envelope is spot that you can make an additional donation amount to go towards field trips costs.

On behalf of  IVA PTA, we thank you for helping to make a difference in the education experience at IVA!

Food Service and After School Extra Curriculars

In order to bring a food service on campus, there are legal hoops to jump through that have set our implementation date back. In the process of seeking out vendors we have requested bids from six vendors and are working with lawyers to draft a service agreement. We are talking with the California Department of Education to determine what federal funds qualify for food service, conferencing with lawyers to draft a service agreement that protects the safety of students receiving food on campus, consulting with two charter school development agencies and our business service provider to fit the program into our budget with the correct categories so that the expense qualified as a proper use of public funds in the right category within our budget. Our budget committee continues to meet to discuss these requirements as well as the implications of a more costly food program, as necessitated by the small number of students served, and its effects on our school culture.

We are able to begin both a student newsletter and IVA yearbook due to parent volunteers. Look for more information in next week's newsletter when we know who our student newspaper editor is as well as the other 8 student council positions.

We have created an email account so that you can email notifications of absences or doctors appointments. Please save attendance@ivalongbeach.org to your contacts. The address will also be posted to our website.

Students can practice independence and responsibility by checking their own PowerSchool account and emailing their teachers with any questions. Have your child access their own account and use it as a reference in case they did not write down their homework assignments in their planners. Our teachers are posting assignments and grades regularly. In addition, if there are any emergency situations on campus we will use your PowerSchool account to contact families. Please take the time on PowerSchool to select all the methods of communication that you would like to receive – email, text, phone call. Please also check that your phone numbers are correct in our system.
p.s. There is also a PowerSchool app available for smart phones!

IVA Student Council

In less than a week we will know our founding student council leaders. We have had 21 students submit a letter of intent - 9 of them for student newspaper editor!! Our student leaders will create committees such as the newspaper team in order for groups of students to work together to create events and historicize this founding year.
Timeline for selecting our Student Council:
September 24th-September 30th: Mrs. Bryant will meet with students who have submitted letters individually to encourage revisions.
September 30th: Final Letter of Intent due.
October 1st: Assembly | 8:30-9:30am all students will meet in the Rec Center to hear speeches read by teachers and vote for Student Council. At lunch, Student Council representatives will be announced.
