Winter Dance

The Winter Dance is Friday, January 22nd from 6:30 – 9:00 pm

Start practicing your dance moves for our two flash mobs during the dance! The songs with coordinated dance moves are: The Black Eyed Peas, “I gotta feeling” from Just Dance 2016, and Pharrell Williams, “Happy” from Just Dance 2015. When either of the two songs are played students can participate by dancing the choreographed moves for that song. You can learn the dance moves by clicking on the links above and practicing at home in the next two weeks. Looking forward to a great night out with our FOX friends!  Please dress comfortable ready to dance!

Art & Music Showcase

IVA’s Music and Visual Arts classes invite you to join us on January 28th for “Something Big in Wonderland” - a showcase of student work and talent.
The student-curated and directed evening will include musical performances, visual art, and other talents the students have prepared both inside and outside of school that they wish to share with the IVA community. Interactive displays and guided tours of our classroom “galleries” will showcase the visual arts and invite you to get creative! There will be refreshments for sale and an E-gallery available for purchase.  More details will follow.

If 8th grade parents still have not registered on ParentVue, you are welcome to call Jenni Brown at (562) 997-8455 for assistance. Right now, it's taking an estimated 10 minutes per parent to establish an account and orient them to the system. For parents experiencing technical problems with ParentVue servers (e.g., student information not loading, application link not opening) they can seek support by either calling the High School CHOICE Hotline at (562) 997-8306 or in person at the High School CHOICE office located at 1515 Hughes Way, Long Beach, CA 90807 on the 3rd floor.

Growing in the Intellectual Virtues

There are three more days to turn in late work for this semester! All late assignments are due this Friday, Jan. 15 for make-up work from earlier in the semester. Assignments given out in the last two weeks of the semester are still provided with the same amount of support to finish or redo in office hours.

Once your student has done all they can do, how do you process your feelings about their grades as a family? If you are discouraged by lower scores than you had hoped for or expected, what can you do with your discouragement? How do you model intellectual character as a parent when faced with academic disappointment?

Here are some ideas:
  • Practice curiosity: Ask questions - seek a deeper understanding to what might have led to this.
  • Take that curiosity into intellectual thoroughness: Investigate on Illuminate with your child. Look together at the “Gradebook” tab, select a class, and look at the “category breakdown” tab. If they are getting high scores on home thinking and class learning then they are practicing diligence and participation in and out of class. Great practices! Are those practices translating into the projects or quizzes? Try to narrow down the cause of the grade in the gradebook and then ask your child to tell you more about how they can work on this category in the next semester.
  • Demonstrate open-mindednessask what intellectual virtues would you say that my child can continue to grow in? What would those look like, sound like, or act like in the classroom?
  • Encourage a growth mindset for learning about how you consider what a grade means. A low grade is not a mark of “failure,” a reason to give up, or a wasted semester. It is a good time to figure out what are the obstacles and see this disappointment as a tool for learning.
How do we learn from our mistakes? How do you help model this for your kids? You are an invaluable part of this learning process as your child grows as a thinker and learner!

To live and learn well,
Principal Bryant
After School Academy - Spring Semester
Do you have a hobby, skill or interest to share with curious middle schoolers? Please consider joining our team of volunteers who support After-School Academy!

Our After-School Academy classes can be based in whatever you or students you know would like to explore (e.g., Spanish, typing, writing, martial arts). These classes will run in six week sessions, but this is flexible according to your schedule. We plan to launch our spring After-School Academy sessions the week of February 15 (after President's holiday weekend). Classes meet for about an hour. Please note that some student-initiated clubs meet after school, and in many ways, these after-school activities will resemble the clubs, but will differ in being adult-led rather than student-led.

We hope that IVA's volunteer-led activities will:
  • provide affordable, safe, enriching place for students during after-school hours
  • build positive culture at IVA
  • allow parents/friends of IVA a place to share their talents & interests
  • foster relationships with students and community
Please contact or email Danielle Montiel with any questions or to volunteer.
