Parent Newsletter January 23rd, 2014

It's a Winter Wonderland Adventure!

Our first dance is tomorrow, Friday, January 24th. Our homemade dance is not going to feel so homemade when it is complete with our DJ - Mr. Rex Miller (husband to our very own Lisa Miller), a Hip Hop demonstration, Just Dance on the Wii and one slow song sponsored and directed in interpretational-style by Principal Bryant. But there's more! We'll have two Emcee's - Dawson and Jenna, bountiful finger foods (thank you so much, parents, for signing up for decorations and food on our Shutterfly Share Site), and a photo booth. Just $5 will purchase a ticket that buys your kids all you can eat, all you can dance and 3 photos in the booth. ($1 for each additional picture they want taken). This is going to be a fun night out for the kids. Please let me know if you have any questions. This one is going to go down in the history books - or at least the yearbook!

It's so great to be a part of a community of students, parents and teachers who want to encourage good, clean fun. We want to envision a middle school dance with as much curiosity and learning as any other endeavor our kids might undertake. This dance is not just a common middle school event, it is a markedly different event because it's a part of how we approach fun at IVA. I can't wait to post pictures for you all!

To learn and live well,

Jacquie Bryant, Principal

Celebrating Our Very Own - Lisa Miller

Lisa Miller joined IVA before it had a location, before it had a principal or teachers, and right in time for a lot of creating! Lisa has recently been courted by a full time job that actually uses her attorney training - not that we didn't appreciate our own "in house council" :). Lisa has been a considerate friend to our students and an indispensable mind in our processes. Lisa is a model of the practice of continued intellectual carefulness and attentiveness that both Danielle and I have learned to appreciate and listen for in thinking through our school-wide procedures together. We are so happy for her new employer and her staff. They are gaining a practicer of intellectual virtues. A good person!

Come join us at the virtue ceremony on Friday to celebrate Ms. Miller together. You can also come and give your well wishes to Lisa and her husband (DJ) Rex - when you drop off your kids at the winter dance!

Do you know prospective Middle Schoolers interested in IVA?

We are accepting applications! We have aprox. 50 open spots for incoming 6th graders for our next school year. We will also have a few 7th grade spots. Applications are due March 21st. More info for prospective families is available on our website.

New Pick Up Location
Is a Success

Thank you, parents for your flexibility! On Tuesday we transitioned our after school pick up and supervision area to the 36th street gate.

Remember to park along the 36th street parking strip rather than in Petroleum Club (Linden) parking on Fridays to join our virtue closing ceremony. The ceremony closes out our week by acknowledging and celebrating intellectual growth in each other. Famalies are always welcome! Our ceremony runs from 2:47pm-2:55pm every Friday. It's a great way to close out the week with a celebration of learning together.

Students Struggle at Intellectual Virtues Academy

Are your hearts warmed by pictures of our students working together, in projects, focused on learning and obviously engaged - like this picture from science class? Mine is - automatically! The parent group last Thursday talked about how to encourage students not only in their successes and eager engagement but also in their struggles. One solution to encourage the struggle and risk taking of genuine learning is to remember to say "Not Yet" as in "you haven't figured it out yet." How do we balance due dates with encouraging the character of learning that real struggle allows our thinkers to develop? How do we use the language of the virtues to acknowledge the struggle in our students' work - and encourage that struggle with a growth mindset? If you weren't able to join us last week you can still read the article and talk to parents about what they are doing to encourage a growth mindset that revels in an opportunity to learn and to struggle. We are working through this together!
