PTSA FITathon and Community Wellness Fair
THANK YOU! Our Fit-a-Thon has been a fun-filled, family-friendly, fantastic success! Because of you, we have raised over $16,000 in donations! We could not have done it without our committee, chaired by Janet Watt or without our many volunteers, or without your participation. Thank you for your generosity!

Parent Academy THIS Thursday
“One of the most useful and entertaining talks we’ve had in the 12 years I’ve been principal. Funny, yet utterly persuasive.” – David Getz, Principal, East Side Middle School, Manhattan

Lenore Skenazy is “America’s Worst Mom.” (Google it!)

The New York City columnist-turned-reality TV show host got that title after letting her 9-year-old son take the subway, alone. In response to the enormous media blowback, she founded the book and blog, “Free-Range Kids,” which launched the anti-helicopter parenting movement.

Her feisty belief that our kids are safer and smarter than our culture gives them credit for has landed her on talk shows from The Daily Show to to Dr. Phil to The View, The Today Show, NPR, Good Morning America, Nightline, ABC World News Tonight, CBS Early Show, CNN, FoxNews, Anderson Cooper, the BBC, CTV and CBC.

We are excited to have Lenore here at IVA this Thursday - grab your co-workers, friends, and neighbors to hear how to raise safe, self-reliant children (without going nuts with worry).

Principal Update
All IVA Students have given their mid year feedback - now it's your turn
Dear Parents - We Want Your Feedback!

With students we have a captive audience at school and we know that it takes your time to compete the survey but your feedback is valuable to us.
We also know that the most effective form of feedback is one that includes continued discussion. Before we ask students to give us feedback we review good practices of effective feedback. It is amazing that students can give us such constructive responses.
What does IVA do with the feedback?
We take the feedback students and parents provide and read it together as a staff in order to find patterns of concerns or ideas that we can use to adjust our practices and remain true to our school's mission. Next week, we will report on our learning from the student feedback but if you are interested in the student results please read more on our website here

Please join the 44 parents who've given us feedback and respond today!

Tardy Policy
We have noticed that a handful of students have repeated tardies to class after break and lunch. In response, IVA is implementing a consequence plan. Parents, please check in with your student to see if they are one of the ones that have a hard time responding to the bell and getting to class. Below, see the steps in our process.

Tardy Policy - Students who arrive tardy to their class after break or lunch will:
1. Receive a verbal warning and check in. Warning is recorded in the office.
2. Receive a warning of 2nd offense and email notification home
3. Lose their privilege at attending the next school event (field trip, dance, etc.)

Our goal is to keep students connected to their learning and in class. So far, we have given a warning to two students and are hoping to see greatly improved presence at the beginning of class with these clear consequences.

It is class policy at IVA that students remain in class the first and last 15 minutes of each block to support PE changing access. The office also tracks dress code violations and cell phone violations although we create contracts on an individual level in response to those incidents.
We are looking for parents to join the PTSA Board for the 2017-18 school year. Positions that are open are: President, Treasurer, Vice President of Fundraising, Vice President of Membership and Secretary. Please contact Susan Horejsi with your interest.

Current nominations: Rebecca Irwin - President, Dana Stump - VP of Membership, Holly Luedee - Secretary
We do not currently have nominations for VP of Fundraising or Treasurer.
