Northrup Grumman Math Counts Competition

IVA Primes competed in the MathCounts Competition at Northrop Grumman on Friday, Feb. 26. Our team came in first place in our division and 7th place overall out of 21 teams. Our top scoring student, Isaac Seydel, came in 17th place overall out of about 180 students. He was the top scoring student in our division. All team members did an amazing job using their tenacity and thoroughness in solving very difficult problems. Way to think, Isaac Seydel, Allison Lowe, Jude McCarthy, Ethan Evans, Elise Watt, Clio Goodwin, Ivy Goodwin, Julian Mancillas, Chase McPherson, and Brendan McPherson!

POPS International Youth Summit

Also on Friday, February 26th IVA sent a team to the POPS International Youth Summit. Coming from all over the U.S, and as far afield as the Caribbean and Africa, these committed students already grasp the severity of the ocean plastic crisis. They won the opportunity to participate in the Summit based on the innovative projects they submitted on how best to combat plastic pollution in their own communities. This event offers students – ranging from 11 to 18 years old – a chance to learn about current scientific research on plastic pollution, share their action projects with their peers, and work directly with mentors to help develop or improve upon their project plans. Way to think Cosmo Hebert, Max Irwin, Emma Robertson, and Allison Lowe!

How to know Your Child's Where, When, What and Who Online

This seminar will walk you through setting up your phone and your kids' phones proactively with simple things to create a permission-based environment.

It's not just just about monitoring your kid's web history or their chats (and most of us aren't even doing that).
  • It's keeping them away from predators that appear in favorite games, on innocuous spaces such as facebook, instagram and youtube.
  • Also showing you how to manage their online footprint until they can manage it themselves.
  • Seeing inappropriate content on youtube, vine, xsites etc.
  • And using unsafe apps can do everything from send out personal information to a whole community including locations, pictures and texts (that were privately sent).
Bring your phones and your kids' phones (knowing their passcodes) to set up some simple (and more complicated) safeguards.
Questions - please contact Sandra Grace
Please RSVP to so she can plan for enough handouts.
Applications and Intent to Re-Enroll

Student, Parent, Teacher Conversations - March 14-18

Our upcoming Student, Parent, Teacher Conversations (aka not your typical Parent Conferences) are intended to connect families and teachers in their joint enterprise to grow the minds of our students. A more typical “Parent Conference” can tend to focus on details or obstacles for the students, and while understanding these details can be very valuable for making adjustments, they can be finite in their application. Instead, we are attempting to create a conversation with the teacher and family together to understand the motivations, abilities, and connection to learning that create concerns for learning.

Who: Student and Parents - mark your calendars for a minimum day schedule the week of March 14 through 18
What: All week long, school will be dismissed at 12:40pm to accommodate the appointment times
Where and When: All meetings will be held in the Rec Center between 1:00pm and 3:10pm. Conversations will take place in 20 minute increments. Sign ups will begin next Monday
Who: Each meeting will include the student, parent/guardians, and two teachers. One teacher will facilitate the meeting with student and parent and the other teacher will be taking notes and asking questions so that we can provide feedback to families with frequently asked questions and evaluate this process.

Join us families!
“Intellectual character growth is an ambitious and deeply personal educational aim. It involves changes to how students are disposed to think and learn and to some of their fundamental beliefs and feelings about these activities. While teachers can have an impact on such things, families typically wield an even greater influence… Ideally, intellectual character education would be a joint enterprise between schools and families.” -Dr. Jason Baehr, Cultivating Good Minds

We understand that these meetings are held during the middle of your work day, but we want to encourage you with 2 laws supporting your involvement and 1 general encouragement.
  • California Education Code: 51100
  • Labor Codes: Family School Partnership Act allows parents to take unpaid time off from work to participate in activities in their child’s elementary, middle or high school or licensed child care facility. School activities include field trips, parent-teacher conferences, and graduations. A parent may take up to 40 hours each year, but no more than 8 hours per month.
  • One of our founders, Dr. Steve Porter, spoke to our parents last year at a Parent Academy and explained that in order to have your child come to IVA you are being asked to get your own education! View this talk from one of last year’s Parent Academy.
