A Letter From Our Principal
A (Growth Mindset) Fresh Start
One of our school's values is a growth mindset: being optimistic about the potential for personal growth, we embrace challenges and regard failure as an opportunity to learn and improve. It takes a lot to have such a mindset when it is easy to feel judged by the imperfect ways schools and our culture measure success - most immediately, students will receive their Fall Report Cards tomorrow with finalized letter grades

How do we help students to have a healthy perspective of their grades and their potential for growth?
How do we balance a focus on the value of growth and struggle when 6th and 7th grades count toward the High School CHOICE process?

To read more about how teachers in all different levels are addressing these conflicts read this blog by a college professor who has implemented a few adjustments to grade from a growth mindset. You'll notice she suggests a few practices that IVA has adopted as standard practice:
  • Giving students a chance to retake tests - specifically in math classes to do test corrections with mistakes explained
  • Adjusting class grouping for activities and using different levels of understanding to grow intellectual humility and autonomy in all students
  • Providing positive feedback for growth and struggle in our weekly virtue ceremony and in our report card comments
Faculty Academy Focus - What Role Grades Play in the Learning Process
Last Friday our faculty and staff examined difficult questions about grading and growth. We realized that as a school we implement practices that go against convenience and "how it's always been done" when we know it is best for student learning. Our teachers go above and beyond because we care about your child's mind! We care that your child is learning and that this new semester doesn't mean we start over and forget about last semester, it means we start fresh - it means we take all the struggles, confusion, and mistakes and learn from them.

Modeling Growth Mindset - Take Heart!
Our teachers rely on intellectual humility to model a growth mindset. Please help us in modeling growth mindset fresh starts by talking with your children about what mistakes you might have made this last semester and what you've learned from them so that they are interested to share theirs with you also.

Practicing intellectual humility, or a willingness to own up to one’s intellectual limitations and mistakes and be unconcerned with intellectual status or prestige, bonds us to others. It is contagious, it builds psychological capital like hope, optimism, and resilience, it facilitates shared leadership.

We celebrate our struggles and we celebrate our growth. We are honored to be a part of your children's lives in these super important ages.

To learn and live well,
Thanks & Praise
A round of applause for our Basketball Coaches - Coach Lisha and Coach Ajay (8th Grade Ariana's sister and brother) and Coach Chris (7th grader Eli's dad) who are volunteering their time to lead our athletes! Tonight is our third game. If you can, come and cheer for our FOXES!

Volunteers Are Our Heros!
As you can see the landscaping project is coming along. We sure could use some more tools! If you have a saw, branch cutter, or gloves that you can send with your students we can have more kids participate. Drop your tools off in the office and they will be locked up at the end of lunch.  If the tools can stay at school for the entire project that would be great. Parent volunteers are also needed to supervise during lunchtime!
