Parent Newsletter October 24th

Greetings IVA Families,

In our second month of school we are discovering the joys of learning, discussing, conjecturing (if that is a word) and experiencing the realities of intellectual struggle and even the minutia of turning in assignments. Our first trimester report cards will arrive on Tuesday, November 26th â€“ the day before our Thanksgiving break. With less than half of the trimester left this is the time to check in on PowerSchool with your kids and ask them what they are excited about doing in class and what they are excited about learning. And let us know what questions you have.
In this edition I want to share one challenge, one request, and several opportunities for parents to get involved at IVA.

To learn and live well,

Jacquie Bryant, Principal

Volunteers Make Our School Great!

We have a variety of ways for parents to get involved at IVA. Click here to view our Volunteer Opportunities on our Shutterfly share site.  We have created space for volunteering at your home, at school on a one time basis, and at school on a regular basis.  Please browse the entire page, scrolling to the bottom of the page to view our sign-up sheets.
One example: we have small to medium-sized tasks around the office that are not urgent, but are those sorts of tasks that if help came, it would help us focus on the thinking and learning of our students and continuing to put into place the other programs we are working to provide - such as food and extra curricular classes. See our Shutterfly site or email our volunteer coordinator Beth Christen at if you can give even 15-30 minutes of your time.

One Request: Volunteers Needed
October 28th & 29th

Our administrative assistant, Lisa Miller, will be supervising the campus on her own Monday and Tuesday of next week. Ms. Montiel, our dedicated and meticulous Program Administrator has been invited to speak at a Charter School Development Center Conference in San Francisco and I am honored to be joining her in representing charter leadership. We are looking for parent volunteers to help Ms. Miller supervise before school, during break, at lunch and after school. Sign up here.

One Challenge: Use Your Imagination

If you could imagine dressing up as your favorite intellectual virtue – what would you wear? Students can dress up for Halloween on Thursday the 31st â€¦ but only if they dress up IVA-style. All costumes must be appropriate for school. Let the challenge begin!

IVA Reading Group - Mark Your Calendars

What are you doing Thursday, November 21st? Mark your calendars for a lively discussion on Paul Tough's book How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character. This recent New York Times bestseller provides an overview of recent research from a variety of disciplines supporting the idea that success in school, and life in general, largely depends on intellectual character virtues like curiosity, intellectual perseverance, and "grit." The event will be structured to provide us an opportunity to talk together, propose questions and consider how we can support our students' character growth - from school, home and in our relationships. Our community partner, Apostrophe Books, has it in stock and is offering IVA families a 10% discount! We will meet in Mr. McCurry's room 116 from 7:00-8:30pm. Come to think and talk with adults who have much in common, most importantly - our kids!

Student Newspaper Editor

Our students are eager to write and to publish their own monthly newsletter! They are looking for a parent to facilitate this process at a weekly meeting. The time of the meeting can be determined. Contact Principal Bryant if you are interested. We can take co-sponsors as well!!

Come Cheer for our Runners!

On Wednesday, October 30th, seven students from IVA will represent our middle school in a cross-country meet hosted by FIYA (Foundation for Interscholastic Youth Athletics).  Find out more on our Facebook Event page.
