Happy New Year EBSC members! We hope everyone is well rested from the holiday season and ready to swim hard as the 2019/2020 swim meet season resumes. The first practice of 2020 will commence on Thursday January 2nd. Don't forget to purchase your 10 ticket or monthly pass before practice!

Our Holiday Swim Camp was a success! Thirty-one swimmers woke up early for one week and swam an average of 4000m in each practice!! Coach Bryan worked us hard, but no tears were shed (at least not in public). Any suggestions or feedback from this year's camp? Please send an email to

Love To Swim: We Need Volunteers

Our annual Love To Swim Meet on Sunday, March 1st is rapidly approaching, and we still need many wonderful volunteers. Volunteering is open to not just ESBC members, but also to your friends and family. No experience is necessary as we will support and train you!

A big thank you to Gareth Williams and Amber Cragg for taking on the big and important roles of Head Timer and Clerk of Course. We are still looking for volunteers to fill these key positions:
  • Officials Coordinator
  • Volunteer Coordinator
A volunteer sign up sheet will be available at practice sign in. We will also need volunteer Timers, Hospitality, Runners, & Check-in Desk/Award personnel.  We highly encourage first timers to come and help out. It is really easy, fun and you get free food!! And you get to watch beautiful people run around in Speedos. What could be better?

Shifts are from 9:30-12:45, or 1-5, with a free lunch provided from 12:30-1.

If you miss the volunteer sign in sheet and want to volunteer, please email, or speak to any of our lovely executive members that you're interested in helping out.

As the weather continues to be cold and wet, attendance usually increases, and the lanes get a reminder:
The check-in desk closes 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the workout.

You cannot swim with the team if you miss signing in. To help speed up signing in (so no one gets left behind), have your tickets or pass ready or arrive early if you need a new 10-ticket or monthly swim pass.

Also be sure to thank our volunteer sign-in desk workers. They arrive early and are last on deck to make your lives easier.

Please also note, when the practice is full, coaches may ask you to move up or down a lane to accommodate and ensure the safety of all swimmers (Maximum of 6 swimmers per lane on weekdays, 12 swimmers per lane on weekends).

Special AGM Thursday, January 23rd

English Bay will be calling a general meeting to go over some items that need to be voted on and approved. We will be reviewing the previous year's financials and the current year's budget. We ask that as many members attend as possible because we'll need a quorum (15 members) for this meeting to occur. If a quorum does not happen, the meeting will need to be held within a week's time from this date.

Please help us by showing up. we will be providing food for all that attend.

Where: Meeting room downstairs at the VAC
When: Thursday January 23rd from 8:15 to 9:30pm*

*meeting end time is dependent on how long it takes for quorum to occur, plus then to review and vote on the financials

Victoria Swim Meet Sun Feb 2nd 2020

There are only two LCM (50m) swim meets in BC each season. So here is your second opportunity to swim your best with fewer turns and less counting for all those distance events. The meet will be held on Sunday February 2nd at the Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, BC.

Registration is open now and closes Wed, Jan 22, 2020 11:59 PM. So don't forget to sign up!

Most of us will be heading to Victoria Saturday afternoonish and leaving Sunday evening, after the meet. We will assist with organizing carpools and hotels, so sign up early so you're not left out! If you are available to carpool and/or need a ride, please contact

Not really sure if you want to swim in this meet? Did we mention there is buffet on the ferry??? Oh, and the results from this meet can be used for meets requiring qualifying entry times (e.g. US Nationals, Worlds, etc.).

We, your coaches, are all excited to continue working together with the team and individuals on personal goals. Remember, feel free to let your coach know about any concerns you have with your health, swim techniques or event goals. Don’t forget to stay focused on proper technique and preventing injury. We will be working on the details and perfecting everyone's turns, stroke technique, dives, etc. in preparation for the 2020 MSABC Provincials.

Lastly, as a regular reminder, please stay hydrated as it will overall help in your daily activities. Please bring a water bottle to practice!

Thank you,
EBSC Coaches

In short-course swimming (25 metres), allowing more than 5 seconds between each swimmer in sets of over 2 lengths means that the lead swimmer may overtake and frustrate the end swimmer, so try to stick to 5 seconds.

The ONLY exception to this is during long-course swimming (50 metres), where it is customary to allow 10 seconds between swimmers.

In addition to the 5 second rule, if someone touches your foot twice, please maintain your pace, and then stop at the wall (to the side, not the middle!) to allow swimmers to pass.

Details on this tip and other etiquette tips can be found here.

Are you new to the club this season?

We want to get to know you!! How do you do this? Fill out this fun little questionnaire, and you will be featured in future social media posts (don't forget to include a picture of yourself).

We highly encourage that you participate! (Veteran members are also welcome to participate).

Give Us Feedback

A reminder that we want feedback!

Once again this season we're looking for your personalized swimming plan! Email it to us. Let us know what you want to get out of your workouts. Totally voluntary of course, but it will help us tailor the workouts for you. If you like, include a photo of yourself so we will have an easier time learning who you are in person. The information will be strictly confidential - only for the coaches' eyes.

Have Any Requests for a Social Event?
We all want to get to know each other and social events are one way to do that. If you have any ideas or want to host a social event, please email your ideas to
Past social events included bowling, pizza nights, pub nights, Sunday brunches.

Check out past social event photo galleries (requires Members Only Page access)
Also, if you have photos to add, email them to!

English Bay is partnering exclusively with Team Aquatics, which means...

DISCOUNTS on all your regularly priced swim stuff! The Shark Card can be used to order items online (and then can be picked up in store if you don't want it shipped). Check out the members page for access to the Shark Card.

Note, the Shark Card discount is for EBSC members only. Please do not share the shark card with non-members.

English Bay Swim Club has a rich history of record setting swimmers so we have decided to create an 'EBSC Club Records' section where we can tabulate and present these times.
Check out the EBSC Team Records Google spreadsheets (Men's, Women's and Relays).

In addition to our team records, EBSC also currently holds:
• Provincial Records - 105
• National Records  - 8

This is obviously a 'work in progress', seeing as records are made to be broken. The list will be in constant flux provided we receive input from the team membership. So, if you have set a new record for the club, submit your data to EBSC's Record Keeper with your name / event (LC or SC) / time / month & year and your record will be added to the list for all to see!

Check the EBSC Calendar and future BTLs for swim changes and/or cancellations.

Changes will also be posted on Social Media
