On Monday night we held our first leadership meeting via Zoom. It was so good to catch up with key volunteers and to see them, even through a screen, was fantastic. I opened our time with a brief reflection on Psalm 46:10, a verse you probably know even if you don’t know it’s “address” – “Be still and know that I am God.” It is often taken as a verse of comfort and assurance, kind of like a parent calming a frightened or anxious child. There is assurance and comfort in this psalm but it’s not quite what we often imagine.
The context describes God as the strength and refuge of his people in the midst of global upheaval. Just prior to the verse in question we read these words, “Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes war cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, ‘Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”

Have a look at that context again. Come and see the desolations God has brought on the earth as he makes wars cease by smashing bows, shattering spears, and burning shields. This isn’t the assuring “There, there, it’s alright” but the assurance that comes when God comes to rescue. And his command to “be still” is not given to his people, but to the nations. It’s like the father coming in to break up the fight between his children: “That’s it! You! In that corner. You! Go to your room. Give me that toy! If you can’t agree, no one gets it!”. The assurance we receive is that God’s anger isn’t directed towards us and that in the upheaval we are experiencing, God dwells with us and we will not fall.

While I’m not certain that the current upheaval is God’s judgment on the world, I do believe that God is in control and at work – “Come and see!” The implication for us is twofold. First, we have assurance in these crazy times. Second, we are invited to see what God is doing. There are extraordinary opportunities that are opening up in these crazy times too and I’m excited to see where God leads us.

Be assured. God is in control and he is with us. Amen!

COVID Safe Ministry

Last week the federal government outlined a three-stage plan for a COVID Safe return to “normal”. The first stage, which came into effect in NSW last Friday, allows up to five visitors in homes, up to ten people at religious services or in outdoor venues, thirteen at a wedding, and more at funerals. The government is still recommending physical distancing and good hygiene practices to avoid a second wave of outbreaks which would significantly slow the reopening plan.

The first stage has no impact on our ministries as a church. We are encouraging our Life Groups – the only groups that might be able to meet if they were small and outdoors – to continue to meet online until we enter Stage Two which will allow up to twenty people to gather.

Beyond that, we also encourage everyone who is part of GBC to follow the recommendations and guidelines. This is one way we can be Others-Focused by doing our bit to keep our community safe and healthy.

May Mission Month

We are continuing on with May Mission Month this week as part of our GBC Online services. Our target this year is $190,000. (If you haven't yet, watch the GBC Updates video, above, to find out how much we've raised so far in 2020).

Over the last few weeks we've heard from three of the projects we're supporting this MMM:

1) Baptist World Aid Australia: Lebanon
2) Bible Society Australia: Remote Australia
3) Mother's Heart Organisation, Cambodia.

As Marc encouraged us in the GBC Updates video, above, take the time to watch the videos of our conversation with representatives from these three organisations via our GBC YouTube channel or download the 'GBC Mission' audio podcast.
