On Wednesday I participated - via Zoom - in two different meetings of senior pastors of larger Baptist churches across Australia. This gathering is one of the events I most look forward to each year and it was disappointing not to be able to spend three days together like we usually do. I’m sure many of you have experienced similar disappointment this year. Even though it was a poor substitute for face-to-face interaction, it was better than nothing (and aren’t you thankful for the technology that we have at our fingertips!).
Like years past, one of the most helpful things about meeting with this group of leaders is the power of being reminded that you are not alone. The question we are facing at GBC about what it means for us to be the church in a post-COVID world are not ours alone. It was good to hear the wrestling of other leaders, their reflections, their ideas, and their tentative guesses. The solidarity of those few hours was refreshing to my soul.

I wrote a few weeks ago that we are starting to really lean into the strategic opportunities of this unique period of time as well as trying to formulate a way forward as restrictions begin to ease. While I don’t feel a whole lot further down the track than I did then, I do feel a greater sense of clarity about the things we need to do moving forward.

I praise God for those moments, like Wednesday, when I am reminded I am not alone and that God is at work – not only here, but everywhere! I hope you have this reassurance too this week.

GBC Updates

Check out this week's GBC Update from Marc Rader - click on the video image below for the latest update of what's happening at GBC. (This week: MMM and COVID-19 easing of restrictions.)

GBC Cares: Food Care
Frozen Meals Drive-By Drop-Off: This Tuesday 2 June 9:30am-10:30am

We'd love everyone's help to fill the freezer at GBC with ready-made meals so that we can bless those in our congregation who are in need at this time - Let's be On-Purpose (with our time), Big-Hearted (with our generosity) and Others-Focused (serving others first)!

We would greatly appreciate meals in all serving size containers - single, double and family size. Please place a label on the disposable container with name of the meal, ingredients, date cooked and your name. Please ensure the meal can be frozen and reheated and does not contain nuts (to protect those with nut allergies).

Our GBC Cares Coordinator, Sheena Hind, will be at GBC's main entrance doors this Tuesday 2 June 9:30am-10:30am to collect your meals, preferably already frozen. Please note, due to COVID-19 restrictions, you will not be able to access the church building.
My Story

We love to hear where God is at work in your life, whether through an answer to prayer, unexplained coincidence, an experience of God (in worship, prayer or the Word), an invitation to join with what God is doing, or a change in your life, or the lives of others.

Recently, Russell ‘Rusty’ Wang had an invitation to join in with what God is doing. He had the opportunity to pray for a friend who had a terminal illness. Rusty said "I felt God saying to pray for him so I asked him if I could pray for him, which despite not being a Christian, he accepted. Afterwards I sent him an email telling him again about God and offered to meet up with him if he wanted. I didn’t hear back from him but my hope is that God called me that day to be Jesus to him in that moment for a purpose. Sometimes our job is to bring the loaves and fishes, not to feed the 5,000. Sometimes we may be someone’s last chance to hear about God. We can’t worry about the possible embarrassment of praying for someone or what people might think about us because we have a higher calling to be obedient to God.”

If you have any stories, go to GBC Links My Story link and submit your story. Where possible, we’ll be sharing our faith community's stories in creative ways.

May Mission Month

We have completed our May Mission Month (MMM) presentations and currently we have raised $27,212 of our $190,000 target. As you prayerfully consider how God might be inviting you to participate and support MMM, you can get all the information on the projects and how to donate at and click on the May Mission Month image. With only one week to go until close of donations (8 June) ask God how he is inviting you to join in and contribute to MMM 2020.

You can also watch extended conversations with our three partnership organisations via our GBC YouTube channel or download the 'GBC Mission' audio podcast. We thank you for partnering with our local & global neighbours in these challenging times!

COVID-19 Update

As Marc mentioned in this week's GBC Update (see video above) as a leadership, our staff and CLT, are beginning to work through what it means for us as a community of faith to respond to the easing of restrictions. We are regularly receiving advice from the Baptist Association of NSW & ACT who are engaged in conversations with the Premier's Office on the most recent changes to restrictions and how it will affect us. We will keep you posted. As always, we really appreciate your prayers.

Kid's Activity Sheets

We love for our kids to participate during the service at GBC Online. Each week in the Notes section we provide an activity sheet to download and print. Roxane, our Children's Ministry Coodinator, also emails the Activity Sheets to allow you to print it out ready for the Sunday service. If you'd like to be included in this email list please send Roxane an email

We love to see the amazing craft activities created by kids during GBC Online so make sure you email Roxane your photos of your kids' artworks.

Memory Verse Monday

Check out GBC's website for this week's Memory Verse Challenge. Our Kidzone leaders are taking turns to teach a new verse each week in very creative ways. One of our values at GBC is to be Whole-Life Learners; everyone, kids and adults, can benefit from taking up this challenge - so why not give it a go and get God's word into your hearts and minds!

The Elders are supporting us through prayer. They are praying specifically for the prayer requests we receive each week. You can ask for prayer by calling/emailing the Elders (see above) or submit it online via GBC Links and/or the Prayer Requests tab at GBC Online. Your prayer request will be prayed for by our Staff, Elders and Prayer Team.

We are encouraging LifeGroups to continue meeting online (via Zoom etc) until Government restrictions allow groups of 20 (Stage 2).

Hopefield have recently been involved with some other organisations in setting up a local food co-op. The initiative is called “show us your cans”  and has been set up to support individuals and families that are struggling in our local area. The co-op has now been running for four weeks and we are servicing 13 organisations in the area with over 300 hampers which equates to about 900 meals a week. If you would like to support this initiative please call us on 9545 0299 and drop off non-perishable items to the Hopefield office Monday-Friday 9.30am-4.30pm.

The Hopefield team continues to support our community in this challenging season and are keen to support us at this time. Socially-distanced counselling, psychological services, speech therapy and support services continue via online and phone counselling for clients. Hopefield are currently sharing resources and educational material to educate and empower. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to find out more.

You can contact Hopefield on 9545 0299, by email or via our website

The Playtime team are missing their face-to-face times with parents, grandparents and kids but are thankful for other ways to keep in contact. Playtime@Home is meeting online and learning about this term's theme:  numbers. We make craft, sing songs and join in activities via a fun and interactive video presented by one of our Playtime Leaders. This week's video is from Robyn Luinstra.

If you know anyone who would like to receive the Playtime@Home resources including the weekly Playtime Leader's video with ideas for engaging young children, please email our Playtime Coordinator - Meddwyn and/or request to join Gymea Baptist Church Playtime on Facebook.
