So. How about Greta Thunberg? The young climate activist from Sweden has been in the news all week for her thundering denunciation of world leaders over their inaction over climate change. It’s well worth a watch and is very confronting. She has become a lightning rod for all sides and I cannot fathom how she is handling the overwhelming support on the one hand and the vitriol on the others.

Now, I don’t know where each of you stands on climate policy and this is not the space to have that debate (though I would broadly support Thunberg’s position). What struck me is her willingness to take a stand on this topic regardless of the reaction. Am I as willing to take a stand? And not only on global issues such as climate change but on the good news of the gospel? No one would have been naïve enough to suggest to this young woman that everyone would love her and what she had to say. The inevitability of opposition makes her decision to speak out a remarkable act of courage regardless of what you believe about what she said.

As followers of Jesus, we share with Greta Thunberg the inevitability that our message will be met with opposition even as our word is received by some. The apostle Paul said, “For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life.” (2 Cor. 2:16-17) Jesus himself told all who follow him, “‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” (John 15:20). The inevitability of opposition requires courage that, for us, comes from the Holy Spirit.

The example of Greta Thunberg has been challenging, not only because of her stance on climate policy but as a wider example of a willingness to take a stand in areas of every greater importance. I trust that, regardless of what you think of this young woman, that you’ll take a few minutes to consider your level of courage to stand up for the good news of God in Christ Jesus.

You’ll start hearing more about this soon, but can I encourage you to make this a priority. This year’s list of speakers includes Craig Groeschel, Bear Grylls, Jo Saxton, Liz Bohannon, Patrick Lencioni, and others. Pathways - Register Now

Pathways is a four-week course which will be held at 10:30am (one hour) over four consecutive Sundays (20 October - 10 November) to help those who are new to GBC find their place in God's mission here.

Pathways explores: Who we are; Where we believe God is leading us; What we are doing to get there; and How you can get involved. It's a space for you to ask questions, meet others who are new to our community of faith, and begin to form some lasting friendships. Pathways will take place during our 10:30am Service so if you're coming in the morning with young children, they'll have the opportunity to enjoy our Kidzone program while you attend.

To register for the next Pathways four-week course (20/10, 27/10, 3/11, 10/11) go to GBC Links or email Karen Watkins.

We’ll be holding a special dedication service at 10:30am on Sunday 20th October. If you’re keen to intentionally commit to raising your child to make their own decision to follow Jesus later in life, we’d love to celebrate that occasion with you. For more information and to register your interest in being involved in this service, please contact our Associate Pastor for Connect and Services,
