The April Highlights Newletter of High Point Holidays

Highlights                                                  April 2013

Welcome to the latest edition of Highlights. Following an expansion of our holiday categories I thought it was appropriate to not only let you know about these changes, see 'Right Place, Right Time' below, but also to focus on one of these new categories. So this month we focus on Wine Trails, specifically our Beaujolais holidays. I'm also pleased to tell you about a new competition to win France On Two Wheels by Adam Ruck. If you're wondering about the March edition of Highlights, we decided that as February's was sent out almost in March we'd move swiftly onto April hoping that Spring would finally arrive!
Don't forget you can now browse our 2013 Brochure online as well as order a paper copy.

Beaujolais Wine Trail

Focus on our Beaujolais Wine Trails

We offer a short break (5 nights, 4 days) independent Beaujolais Wine Trail. The walking holiday traverses the vineyards of the Beaujolais Grand Cru and offers a perfect mix of great walking and the best local wines. You can experience daily wine tasting of some of the finest wines in the region such as Fleurie, Moulin a Vent, Julienas, Chiroubles and Brouilly, and because you may wish to take some home with you, a wine pick up service is included. You will experience the great Beaujolais hospitality in small and charming guest houses all on vineyards where of course you'll get to try their wines. All breakfasts, 3 picnic lunches and 4 evening meals are included in the holiday price along with wine pick up service, wine tasting in your guest houses and of course your detailed walking maps and notes..... and all for £465 per person.

Our Beaujolais Vintage Wine Trails Guided walking holiday is scheduled for 12th to 19th June. The Beaujolais region in central France is synonymous with good food and wine and you'll certainly have the chance to sample both in abundance; from our gourmet lunches to the great 4 course meals served in our small traditional guest houses, your taste buds will be thoroughly spoilt. 7 nights accommodation, breakfasts, 6 quality packed lunches with wine and 6 four course evening meals with wine and the services of your guide for the holiday all included for £725 per person.

Located to the north and east of Lyon, the Beaujolais is a series of beautiful rolling hills and valleys lined by vines and crowned by forest. Despite the relatively gentle nature of their slopes, the scale of the peaks and the depths of the valleys create a landscape of great panoramas and rich contrasts.

France on Two Wheels

Competition

Win one of 3 copies of France on Two Wheels - Six Long Rides for the Bon Vivant Cyclist by Adam Ruck

Adam undertakes six journeys through the most beautiful French regions. France on Two Wheels is packed with practical tips: on rail travel with a bicycle, mending a puncture in French, and the best stopovers along the route.  You can enter our competition here.

We asked Adam to tell us a bit about how the book came about and what he loves about cycling in rural France. You will be able to read his guest blog very soon.

Jura Wine Book

Jura Wine

Wink Lorch, a writer and educator on wine, has started a project to fund and complete a book on the Jura wine region. A comprehensive book on the Jura wine region is long overdue and you can help. The book will be primarily on the wines of the Jura, but the delicious regional cheeses, sausages and other local foods from Jura and Franche-Comté will be explored too, and there will be a local travel section with tips on where to stay, eat, shop and visit.

February's Newsletter focussed on our Jura Wine Trail. The Jura is one of the smallest wine regions in France, but what it lacks in volume it makes up for in its originality and quality. Our Jura Wine Trail follows the vines south, allowing you to discover not only the unique Jura wines, which include the famous Vin de Paille and Vin Jaune, among the most prized wines in France, but also historic gems such as Baumes-les-Messieurs and Chateau Chalon. The Jura is also home to 2 of France’s best known cheeses: Comté and Morbier. Comté received AOC status in 1958 and Morbier is one of our personal favourites.
Wine Trails

Right Place, Right Time

Our Walking Holidays on our website have always been divided up by Destination or by Guided or Independent/Self-Guided.
We have now begun to segment them further to make it easier for you to find the right holiday.

We now have holidays listed by:
Wine Trails
Coastal Trails
Mountain Walking
Short Breaks

Please also note that walks are always Graded from Easy through to Challenging to give you a good idea of the difficulty and lengths of the walks. Click here for an explanation of these.

The holidays are also only available at the most appropriate times of year, but to give you an idea of what weather to expect, there are several pages with details of average regional climate, such as our Baronnies Climate page, which also give an indication of best times to visit to see, for example, the lavender in flower. If you are unsure of the best time for you to take an independent walking holiday to a particular region or country, don't hesitate to ask for our advice
