Welcome to the September edition of Highlights, your monthly update on the latest news at High Point Holidays. This month we are going to tell you a little bit more about what to expect from a High Point Holiday. We focus on our independent walking holidays and what we do to ensure you can relax and enjoy the scenery. We also update you on new items on our website and the latest competitions.
It's also never too early to start planning your 2013 High Point Holiday, 'where the experience is everything.'

Focus on our Independent Walking Holidays:

Our Independent Walking Holidays are carefully developed to give the customer an authentic and memorable experience throughout their walking break. As part of their development, we personally check all footpaths and trails for suitability. This sometimes means, for example, abandoning the use of a well trod byeway because the hedges are too tall to allow for any views or swapping an overgrown path for one that gets more local use. In France the main footpaths are generally better sign-posted than the UK. In the UK every other field seems to have some footpath or other, so it is important that we check all routes. Because a path is on a map doesn't mean it will be easily navigated or that it is ever used.
For the UK holidays, we provide walkers with OS Explorer 1:25,000 maps marked out with their route; in France we provide the French version of this which are the Top 25 series of IGN maps. To accompany the maps we provide comprehensive walking notes to ensure that you find your way with little effort leaving you free to enjoy your surroundings. The walking notes are also designed to enhance your walking experience, giving you information on anything from the flora and fauna to the historical and geological background of the region. In other words, whatever your interests there will always be something waiting for you to discover.

Old Wardour Castle

Walking Highlights

When planning and creating our walking holidays we try to create daily highlights, whether that be a sweeping panorama or an ancient monument coming into view.
On our independent walking holiday Wonders of Wessex it's a 14th Century castle that might surprise you. You will walk across fields and into High Wood, along a path that takes you through a stone archway. You will hardly see the castle until you emerge out of the trees into the open space occupied by the castle and lake. Wardour Castle was inspired by the hexagonal castles in fashion in parts of the Continent, particularly France; its design being unique in the UK.
We have added an article on Wardour Castle in which you can find out its involvement in the English Civil War and its modern connection to Robin Hood and Sting.

We continue to add content about the places that both our guided and independent walking holidays visit, giving you an insight into the history, people and places.
French Phrases

Parlez-vous francais?

Do I need to be able to speak French on High Point Holidays' French Guided Walking Holidays or French Independent Walking or Cycling Holidays?

It's a great experience if you can speak to the locals in their language, but it is certainly not a condition of our holidays. Our guided walking holidays in France will be lead by bilingual guides. In many guest houses, meals are taken with the hosts and a grasp of French would help, although many speak excellent levels of English. We do suggest that you try and embrace the cultural differences and be open minded, after all, our holidays are based around having an authentic local experience.

We would suggest you give it a go at whatever level suits you; at the least, buy a phrasebook and if you want to go further, have some French lessons. For our Australian customers, check-out VoulezVouloz who offer French lessons to students in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and the Central Coast and all in the comfort of your own home.
