Meet the Music Director

In preparation for the start of his inaugural season, Music Director Carlos Izcaray talks with Director of Community Engagement Alice Dutton about his background, his musical tastes, and his plans for the future of AYS.

Podcast: Meet the Music Director

"I want to make sure that I am able to continue Maestro Mehli Mehta’s dream, his enthusiasm and belief in the music, that classical music is something that needs to be carried forward into the future. I also want to broaden the spectrum of repertoire that the orchestra is exposed to. I want to promote a sense of global citizenship for AYS musicians so that they can be exposed to and influenced by different cultures, as well as be conscious of and play a role in their communities. Above all, I want to inspire a sense of community in the musicians of AYS..." - Maestro Carlos Izcaray

Share-A-Stand is back,
and bigger than ever!

The start of this new school year marks the official expansion of our Share-A-Stand program. AYS is now serving twice as many schools, and three times as many students. This inspiring in-school program gives middle school kids one-on-one time with AYS mentors, who offer advice on everything from how to hold a bow, to scheduling practice time and writing their own instrumental arrangements of favorite songs.

Thank you to the Green Foundation, the Flourish Foundation, and our community of supporters for making this program possible.

Alumni Spotlight: Steven Logan

Our former timpanist Steven Logan was just named Principal Timpani with the Aukland Philharmonia Orchestra! We recently caught up with Steven, and he had this to say about his time at AYS:

"Performing with the American Youth Symphony was an experience I will always take with me wherever I go. When I think back on my time playing in the orchestra, my first thought is of how emotional each performance was. Anything in life is at its highest emotional state when being experienced for the first time, and with the age of the players of the orchestra, each concert is a first time opportunity. The competitiveness of the audition process and the age of the musicians guarantees you will take part in a performance that marries masterful playing with youthful excitement. Coming to an American Youth Symphony concert offers a one of a kind take on works you may have heard many times before, and an inspired introduction to those that you haven’t."

Congratulations Steven! And Bon Voyage!
