Street Outreach Services brings support to homeless

Department of Health and Human Services staffers take to the streets each week, heading out on foot or in an RV to locate and help people experiencing homelessness, providing them with services and sustenance. Read more

Volunteer firefighters donate nearly 100,000 hours to county fire service

One of the projects detailed in the 2013 Humboldt County Fire Chiefs' Annual Report is the new Fieldbrook fire station. See what each fire department has done over the last year, maps of coverage districts and more. This year's report is dedicated to the memory of Briceland Fire Chief, Tim Olsen (pictured), who passed away on March 20. Read more and see the resolution honoring Olsen's life.

DHHS’ Mobile Outreach program offers free vegetable seeds for spring gardens

To encourage folks to try home gardening, DHHS’ Mobile Outreach program offered free assorted vegetable and herb seed packets — from spinach and squash to carrots and corn — to those who visited the traveling Mobile Outreach vehicle during one of its scheduled stops around the county in April.

Sheriff Mike Downey swore in Deputies Ben Filippini, 21 years old from Hydesville, and Marcus Walker, 21 years old from Arcata, on April 14. Read more

Headwaters Fund appoints new chair

The Headwaters Fund Board recently appointed new officers for the coming year. Dr. Edward “Buzz” Webb will serve as Chair. Webb is Vice President Emeritus of Humboldt State University, having retired after 25 years, and he has served on several community boards.

On its 100th birthday, UCCE asks you to be a citizen scientist for a day

Join us on May 8 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) with the rest of the country. Humboldt County, which formed the first UCCE Department and 4-H clubs in the state, is asking you to join in a one-day science project and be a scientist for a day. Check out our three sample science projects and other activities on our web site. Read more.

Officials tour Food for People facility, discuss issues around food insecurity

Department of Health and Human Services leaders and two Humboldt County supervisors met with representatives from Food for People on March 31 to learn more about the nonprofit organization and tour its facility.Read more.

A Headwaters Fund survey found that 57 percent of business owners plan to retire in 5-10 years. While selling their business is often fundamental to retirement, many don't have a plan to do so. Come listen to speakers with experience in the buy/sell process, and network with other business owners.

CAST open house celebrates 18 years of community service

Humboldt County's Child Abuse Services Team (CAST) works to protect victims of abuse. Formed in 1996, CAST consists of staff from a variety of agencies, which helps victims connect with services more quickly and protects them emotionally. Read more or watch video.
