Board of Supervisors proclaims May as 'Foster Parent Appreciation Month'

Fifth District Supervisor Ryan Sundberg read a proclamation at this morning’s board meeting recognizing May 2014 as Foster Parent Appreciation Month, noting that “foster parents meet a special need in our community by ensuring children and youth receive the attention they need, the respect they deserve and unconditional love.” Read more

Cooperative Extension offers workshop for making home kitchen products for sale

If you are interested in making value-added products in your home kitchen, UC Cooperative Extension is holding a two-part workshop on May 28 and June 11 designed for you. Workshops will teach participants about the new Claifornia Homemade Food Act (AB 1616), which allows individuals to prepare and package certain non-potentially hazardous foods in private home kitchens. HUD grants help local homeless assistance programs

Eight Humboldt County homeless assistance programs have received federal funding totaling more than $647,000 to help keep people off the streets. The funds are part of $1.56 billion in Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance grants awarded in April by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to renew funding to more than 7,100 homeless programs across the nation. Measles case confirmed in Humboldt County

Officials from the Department of Health & Human Services announced on May 20 that a man admitted to a local hospital earlier that week has tested positive for measles. The risk of exposure to others is believed to be minimal. Read more.

Notice of construction in McKinleyville

PG&E in cooperation with Humboldt County Department of Public Works will be undergrounding overhead utilities along School Road from Central Avenue to U.S. 101. Construction will run from May 19 through December. Read more.

Pet owners urged to vaccinate animals against rabies

The Humboldt-Del Norte Veterinary Medical Association is sponsoring low-cost canine rabies vaccination clinics throughout the county in May and June. Dog vaccinations are $6 each. Other canine and feline vaccinations will be available. The cost of these vaccines will vary with each clinic. A complete clinic schedule can be found here.

Kraft recalls select cottage cheese; warning about undeclared allergens

Kraft Foods Group is voluntarily recalling select cottage cheese products. Some ingredients were not stored in accordance with Kraft's standards. Also, the California Dept. of Public Health warned consumers with milk allergies not to eat select variety of Dave's muffins.

Economic Development hosts Business Succession Planning Workshop

Through surveys and interviews with business owners, the Headwaters Fund found that 57 percent of those they talked to planned to retire in the next 5 to 10 years, but did not have a succession plan. For many entrepreneurs, the majority of their finances and security are tied to their businesses, so selling their business is fundamental to their ability to retire.
