NZ Primary Healthcare Awards

Promise and Peril: How artificial intelligence is transforming health care

AI has enormous potential to improve the quality of health care, enable early diagnosis of diseases, and reduce costs. However, it needs to be implemented with caution and care. Otherwise AI can exacerbate health disparities, endanger patient privacy, and perpetuate bias. In this report, STAT, with support from the Commonwealth Fund, explored these possibilities and pitfalls, and highlights best practices in this area.

This guide focuses on quality improvement, and is especially useful for healthcare staff leading fast and efficient service change as a result of the COVID pandemic.

Digital enablement gap analysis is live on the Ministry's website

The digital enablement programme (within the Ministry of Health's Data and Digital Directorate) identifies, supports and commissions new and innovative ways people can access health care through digital means. A key focus is to increase digital equity, so Māori, Pacifica and those who traditionally have not engaged with health services have the same level of access to services as others.

New NOAC brochures to use and share

A new set of multilingual resources (in 8 languages) is now available. These were developed in response to a gap identified by Counties Manukau pharmacists who found over a third of patients being started on novel oral anticoagulants (NOAC) do not speak English as their first language and are at higher risk of medicine-related complications.

Poverty and food insecurity often go hand in hand with obesity, a result of people eating food high in calories but low in nutrients, says Massey University School of Health Sciences senior lecturer Geoff Kira in this article.
