In this month’s health sector news, we bring you information on the 2020/2021 New Zealand Health Survey and a report on the health care experiences of disabled people during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.   

In Health Navigator NZ updates, we link to our new video series for people with COVID-19 isolating at home and our print resources that support these videos. Also included are two self-management apps.

How to use a pulse oximeter
A pulse oximeter is a small device that fits on your finger and quickly and easily checks your oxygen levels and heart rate. This video explains how to use one, what the numbers mean and when you should seek medical advice. Watch the video.

Health care experience of disabled people during COVID
The Health Quality & Safety Commission has released a report on the healthcare experience of 4,000 disabled people during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.The findings demonstrated a significant impact on disabled people, who make up around 24 percent of the population in Aotearoa New Zealand. Read more.
2020/21 New Zealand Health Survey
Key findings from the 2020/21 New Zealand Health Survey include one in 10 adults reporting cost as a barrier to seeing a GP and one in 100 children have an unfilled prescription due to costs. The survey also noted psychological distress among adults has increased over time and one in five adults have a hazardous drinking pattern. Read more.
