Tēnā koe,

In this Health App Library newsletter, we bring you information on a new category added to the app library – food label reading apps. We also offer reviews on a range of contraction timer apps and an Aotearoa New Zealand-based app that provides information about breastfeeding.  We also review an insomnia coach app, which has a 5-week training plan to help users change their sleeping habits.

Ngā mihi,

Dr Janine Bycroft

No data? No problem!
Late last year Health Navigator NZ became a zero-rated data (also known as sponsored data) website. This means that all mobile data used when whānau access the Health Navigator NZ website is charged to the Ministry of Health.

The cost of mobile data can be a barrier to whānau accessing essential health and wellbeing information or digital services, so we would like you to help share the great news far and wide.

You can share Health Navigator NZ's Facebook post from here or use the following copy and access a slideshow to use here.

No data? No problem. You can access information on the Health Navigator NZ website without using mobile data if you use the Spark, Skinny, Vodafone or 2degrees mobile networks. That means if you have run out of data or have a phone with no data on it, you will still be able to go to the Health Navigator NZ website to find out about health conditions, medicines, healthy living and so much more.
But even if you have data on your phone, you can still visit the Health Navigator NZ site – for free!

Contraction timer apps
Contraction timer apps are used to help users track contractions during labour. While they may be useful, they must be used with caution. This page provides users with advice on how to use contraction timer apps safely, including when to ring their lead maternity carer.
Mama Aroha app
Mama Aroha app is a New Zealand-based app that provides information about many aspects of breastfeeding. It includes information such as the importance of breastfeeding, support for breastfeeding skin to skin, supply and demand feeding, what to expect, feeding cues, latching and positioning, hand expressing and milk storage.
Insomnia coach
This app has a 5-week training plan that helps users change their sleeping habits. It includes calculating their ISI sleep score, providing advice on sleep hygiene, setting up their sleep environment and managing habits that may impact on their sleep.
We need your help
To be useful to consumers, the app library needs clinical reviews of apps. If you have experience of using a patient-focused app in a clinical setting or an interest in the use of health apps, please get in touch. We are looking for health professionals to help us review apps.

We’d love to hear from you. Drop us an email: sandra@healthnavigator.org.nz
