Transform your health resources and services
Are you planning to redesign one or more of your services? Then what are you doing to capture the voice of the whānau who use your programme or service? Co-designing with them harnesses their knowledge and creativity in identifying problems and generating and implementing solutions. As one of our board members, Dr Rebecca Grainger, puts it, “the key benefits of involving consumers in designing services is that we put a mirror to the service, we see it for what it is. We understand it and we get the human stories of what interacting with that service is currently like”.

Want that input to your service? The Health Consumer Advisory Service (HCAS) can help. The service was established in 2015 by the Ministry of Health and Health Navigator Charitable Trust to assist health service planners to engage directly with experienced health consumer representatives.

There are now 13 HCAS members who range in age from 21 to 91, come from different backgrounds and regions, and bring a range of skills and experience. Most importantly, they are committed to partnering with healthcare providers to improve the quality of care and health and wellbeing outcomes for all New Zealanders.

If you have a project about to begin, that’s the ideal time to include consumer input; see the real differences people who actually use our services can make! Contact HCAS manager Susie Hill on 021 815 504 or to discuss your project needs, and read more about the service and its members here.

How Health Navigator NZ can help you
Studies show learning is enhanced when whānau are given quality written or online information to support their retention and understanding following a consultation or hospital admission. The Health Navigator NZ website is designed to make it easy for your clinical teams to give people relevant New Zealand information and self-care resources.

You can print out topic sheets, share pages via email and social media or jot down topic suggestions on our wallet cards for whānau to look up online at home. We also have posters and rack cards that are ideal for waiting rooms. Order here

**Reminder: This clinical update is to give DHBs, PHOs and other key health groups an overview of what's happening in the Long-Term Conditions and Health Navigator space. We bring you news and links to relevant health promotion topics for the month. As always, we are keen to hear from you about ways we can support your region and population. Please email
