A Truly Wonderful Time

Truly, it was the most wonderful time of the year!

Happy 2016 Volunteers! The last two months of 2015 were quite eventful. We have the best volunteers here at LARS and this is never more evident than during the holidays. Following are some recent achievements reflecting your outstanding work:

  • 160 Laurel families (426 kids) and 35 seniors were helped with food and gifts through LARS’ Holiday Program.
  • LARS’ 11th Annual Turkey Trot grossed $50,355 compared to $45,759 in 2014.
  • In November and December, we counted on 215 volunteers who donated a total of 988 hours of their time despite the cold weather and busy schedules at home.
    • Compare that to 116 volunteers who donated a total of 564 hours in November and December of 2014. That’s almost double!
  • LARS distributed 1505 bags of food in November and December!

A Wish Come True

12 year old Ian wrote at the top of his holiday wish list: "to be on a basketball team in the community."

His family was matched up with the Laurel Board of Trade as their donor, who was able to pull some strings with Laurel Parks and Recreation to get the fees waived for Ian to be an official member of a local youth basketball team.

Ian and his mom were overjoyed to hear that his wish was fulfilled, complete with a brand new basketball, shoes, and uniform so he could join practice sessions right away. We may not always be able to help with the big things, but sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference!

Holiday Thank You Letter

Here is one girl’s thank you letter to LARS for the gifts she received through our Holiday Program

Drum Roll Please!

We are excited to announce that in November LARS became a Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) Partner for Wellness! The Capital Area Food Bank, located in Washington DC, is an organization that distributes food and is devoted to battling hunger.

Of the 444 non-profit partners that receive food from the Capital Area Food Bank, LARS was chosen, along with 28 others, to earn the title of Partner for Wellness. This means that LARS has demonstrated its commitment to providing healthy food and nutrition education to the Laurel community. LARS was awarded a $500 food grant and a new refrigerator for our food pantry. As we move onward in 2016, we plan to continue our efforts of being a true partner in the well-being of our clients.
